The beginnings of Le Portrieux

The little Fontaine Saint-Quay creek was exposed to the north-westerly winds, which are particularly strong on this part of the coast, and did not give as much shelter to shipping as the owners might have liked. So the port moved to its present site. Its name, Portrieux, has two possible origins : For some people, it comes from the name of the fishing nets used in the bay, called "rieux", and, for others, it is the name of the fires lit by the Armoricans (Bretons) on the highest points along the cliffs, which were used to send messages from one village to another and also to give reference points to sailors.
This new site, being much more sheltered, developed very quickly: starting in 1612, the first boats set off to fish off the coast of Newfoundland. The extent of its maritime activities meant that it was the first of the ports in Saint-Brieuc Bay to be developed. The building work continued at a steady pace until 1871.
