Photographer’s Note

Here is Saint-Gilles chapel in Riec-sur-Belon, south of Finistère department. It was built in 19th century with a gothic revival architecture. To find this chapel, you have to leave the centre of Riec-sur-Belon towards Le Trévoux, then the chapel is signaled at right in Loctudy village. A few kilometers later, there's a small road on the left driving you to the chapel, in the middle of fields, bottom a small wood. Close to the chapel you can see a cross and a fountain. A pardon takes place here every first sunday of september.

The chapel is dedicated to Saint-Gilles. Saint-Gille was a greek saint of 7th century. He retired in a forest close to Nîmes, in the south of France. His only companion was a doe who gave him her milk. During a royal hunt by king Wemba, the doe came under protection of Saint Gilles. The saint was wounded with an arrow. King Wemba was very affected and he gave Saint Gilles a valley, Flavienne Valley, so that he could build an abbey : it will be Saint Gilles abbey in Gard departement. It was an important pilgrim place on the road to Santiago.
