Between Moissac and Valence of Agen, the Garonne abruptly takes the direction of south-west and followed two large curves which bring it closer to the Gascon plate in the medium of the grounds of alluvia, then passes to the foot of the hill of Auvillar. This hill, located on left bank of the river, is made of two stages. It is on the lower plate, of weak extent, and overhanging the river, which is placed the village of Auvillar. One is unaware of back to which time the foundation of Auvillar goes. If it were possible to question by major excavations, perhaps the substructions of the site of the old castle of the counts d' Armagnac, one would find there the proof that the current city covers, like many others, the remainders of a Gallic oppidum, and that it is on this sitted antique that the monuments of the Gallo-Roman period and the Average Age settled successively that one finds there rather frequently; but, in the doubt, we can affirm only one thing, namely that Auvillar existed while the Romans were Masters of Gaule. Indeed, a Roman way, probably that which went from Toulouse to Agen by left bank of the Garonne, passed by Auvillar. Fragments of mosaics are regularly discovered in the surroundings. Become, under the kings of the second race, the vicomté chief town of one, this city played after a role more significant than in the past: the remains of civil constructions and the buildings religious contribute to show it. The walls of the city were flanked turns and bastions. One of the turns was cut down by higher order, by the revolutionists of 1794, and the last bastion was demolished in 1839. Auvillar is reproduced today on the list of the most beautiful villages of France. The restoration of the district of the Port, one of most attractive, is completed, as well as the construction of the Center of cultural exchanges (in particular the Mill with nave).
