Photographer’s Note

Étienne de La Boétie was born in this marvelous Rennaissance hotel in 1530.
Poet, philosopher and humanist, he defended new ideas in this century upset by the violence of wars of religion. He wrote particularly Discours de la servitude volontaire, a modern reflection that denounces all forms of tyranny.

La Boétie is mostly indissocialble from his friend Montaigne. They met in the parliament of Bordeaux, where both were lawyers. Standing against fanaticism, they advocate peace and reconciliation between Protestants and Catholics.
The two men shared the same desire for peace and justice, were united by the same thought.
Inconsolable at the death of his friend and model, striken down at 33 years by a sudden illness, Montaigne dedicated this phrase became famous :

"If you press me to say why I loved him, I feel that I can not express other than saying : because it was him, because it was me"
