Photographer’s Note

Périgueux is the proud owner of the largest cathedral in southwestern France. The Cathedrale St. Front is one of the most attractive constructions the town of Périgueux offers. This Cathedral is located towards the quarter of Le Puy St. Front, and is one of the largest and oldest ones of the region. The Cathedrale St. Front was constructed between the years 1125 and 1150 in honor to a bishop, and was completed in 1173. The controversial 1852 restoration, by architect Paul Abadie who preferred redesigning to restoring, was not well-received in the Périgord. He even removed the Romanesque refectory. The museum now houses those original carvings. Byzantine inside and out, it became the model for Sacre-Coeur in Paris ~
a commission Abadie received shortly after St-Front's completion. It is one of the most distinctive buildings of the town as well as one of the spots which offer the best views on the surroundings.
