Photographer’s Note

My first photo from Beynac showed the castle as it is seen from the banks of the river Dordogne, which does give a good idea of its situation on top of the cliff, but not of its massive medieval style. Because of it it was chosen to be featured in the hilarious movie "Les Visiteurs", so for this 2nd picture I have chosen the additional title of the movie, "Les Couloirs du Temps" (Corridors of Time).

The castle is supposed to have been built by Maynard de Beynac in the XIIth century, possibly around 1115, first as a dungeon overlooking this curve of the Dordogne. Due to its strategic location it was quickly expanded because in these troubled times the Dordogne was a disputed border between France & England, Beynac was standing on the french side with Marqueyssac and facing Castelnaud in english hands.
