Photographer's Note

Scanned from a slide, taken 1990 and developed at France Loisirs.

To the best of my faded memory, this was shot with a Vivitar camera and Kodak film, too long ago for me to remember much else about the specs. I only noted where this had been developed because I’m hoping that either someone from France or anyone familiar with the store could inform me whether or not it’s still in existence?? It’s just my personal curiosity.

I often wonder how much this, and other cities I’ve been fortunate enough to visit, have changed over the last couple of decades…or if they’ve remained the same. I absolutely love the charm and ambiance of small villages such as Tournon, because they seem to hold on to so much of their history and character.

Obviously the picture quality is not very sharp, but I’ve been in a bit of a nostalgic mood this last week and have had fun going through older photos and trying to bring them back to life.

Oh yes, I know that nostalgic feeling quite good myself. I recently had a look trough my old Ectachrome slides as well. Unfortunatly most of them are beyond any chance of restoration. But I still have fond memories of my Practica B200 camera or how proud I was when I could afford a Minolta X700.
But I love the dated feel of old slides like this one, the are good witnesses of times gone by.
Lovely overview over Tournon and the Rhone river with the vineyards on the opposite bank of the river.

Yes, I believe France Loisirs is still in existence; at least I remember seeing a branch not so long ago. I like the point of view here and the detail to be observed in the tiled roofs, always a favourite subject of mine. The image has not lost any of its punch even after almost 23 years; I wish I could say the same about my slides.

Excelent view down to the "sea of roofs". I like the composition with the town houses, river and the vineyards aon the slopes bhind.

Thank you for your comment to Eucalyptus Trees. You should not ask how I came in but how I came out. Actually I was lucky, one week afte my visit the forest was destroyed by fire, left 200 people dead. Eucalyptus is burning like petrol. When the fire starts, the escape is very difficult, almost impossible.

Hello Jason,

For a scan I think the sharpness is good.
(a good scanner is the Nikon Coolscan 9000,
or -cheaper- the Epson V500).
The picture starts with the charming old
roofs and ends by the hills and sky and
these layers creates a nice depth. Light
managenent and composition are good.

I don't know the town, but looking at the shot, I hope it's reasonably unchanged, as it looks like a beautiful old city with winding unplanned streets and some beautiful old buildings that feel like they're out of time. Great POV - were you up on a hill for this, or was there a tall tower here?

Excelent old scanned picture, Jason.
View of roof-tops on the riverside town, taken from higher POV with good clear details and depth along.
managed well under grey sky's.

Beautiful place there.
Great shot the colorful roofs in front, the mountains at the back broken appart by the water.
the picture is showing the peace in that little village.
