Photographer's Note

This is the dormitory from the Senanque Abbey close to Gordes. This is the 30m long room where monks would sleep at night. It's located right beside the church (small door in the foreground) since praying in the church was the last and first thing they would do each day.

The room was erected in 1170 with typical simple architecture from the cistercian style trying to cancel any distracting element from the environnement so the monk could be fully dedicated to prayer.

I've been in that abbey a dozen of times now thanks to my wife and each time I'm amazed by the way the monks did master the stones in their architecture technics. You have the feeling that the light is playing with the stones endlessly. That's a pure marvel to me.
