A view of the belfry in Ménerbes, Provence. On the left bedecked in flags stand the Mairie or Town Hall.
Ménerbes is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France, a walled village on a hilltop in the Luberon mountains, foothills of the French Alps.
The city of Ménerbes and its citadel were the site of a major battle between Huguenots and Catholics, called the Siege de Ménerbes, which lasted from 1573 to 1578 during the French Wars of Religion. Following early battles across France, Protestants decided to intentionally antagonize Pope Pius V by establishing a stonghold in Ménerbes, initially with 150 soldiers and followers led by Scipione de Valvoire, Gaspard Pape de Saint-Auban, and a baron from Germany. General mobilization on both sides followed, with Catholic forces led by Henri d'Angoulême for the Pope. Despite the balance of power strongly in favor of Catholics, fighting dragged on, increasing in force as time passed. Surrounded by trenches with opposing soldiers, the citadel suffered more that 900 blows by cannonballs, assaults by 14 tons of lead bullets, and barrages by incendiary weapons leading to destruction of its towers. The Protestants finally agreed to negotiations, surrendering on 9 December 1578 to a "glorious capitulation." The battle, which lasted five years, two months, and eight days, had been costly, draining the coffers of the towns in the Comtat Venaissin and putting a heavy financial burden on papal accounts.
The village and surrounding area came to the attention of the world in general in the 1990's through the books of British author Peter Mayle. They tell the story of a British expatriate who settled in the village of Ménerbes. One of the books, "A Year in Provence" was subsequently produced as a TV series starring John Thaw and screened in 1993. In addition, a novel by Mayle was made into a film in 2006 - "A Good Year " - directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. This was filmed in the region mainly in the nearby town of Bonnieux.
After relocating to The Hamptons in New York state, to get away from fans and sightseers at his home in Provence, Peter Mayle subsequently returned to France and now lives in Lourmarin, also situated in the Luberon, in Provence.

Excellently captured clock tower from very well selected viewpoint. The view from lover angle makes the tower majestic and dominant. The light is perfect, the contrast against blue sky superb. Well done. Many thanks for excellent introductory note. Greetings, Miro

Lots of nice things to entertain the eye here, my eye is drawn between the color of the flags and the beautiful building, but just as much through the archway to the fine expansive view beyond. You really chose a perfect viewpoint to compose this and include so much. That sky is stunning too.
All the best

you chose a very effective point of view and made excellent use of perspective and framing, offering us a great presentation of the intriguing antique and weathered architecture. I like very much the graphical quality bestowed by the angle of the strong light and your superb contrast management. Colours and shadows are very delightful and I love the shade and the distant view through the arch. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,

A marvellous blue sky backdrop with good sharpness and density. Punchy light contrasts with excellent graphism. The arch at right affords a distant view of the mountains. Perspective has been well managed with no discernible distortion. Tfs!

Ce beffroi est imposant. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails et les couleurs de l'architecture du beffroi. La bonne luminosité rehausse la beauté des couleurs. Bonne soirée.

A number of elements on this pic., had intrigued me, Stephen: The Bell operating mechanism atop of the clock-tower, which by itself has old-style Roman numerals - marvelousely in clear view against the sky.
The view under the arch, with great DOF towards the landscape on far.
The rooms with view above the archs, and the shield carved on.
And the three flags, in vivid colors decorated the facade.
Bravo for a magnificent shot, premeditated POV.
