Dumb luck played a role again. As I was taking a short break myself and enjoying this view over Vieux Port and Notre Dame de la Garde, these two gentlemen decided to have a seat right in front of me...so of course, it only seemed natural to incorporate them into a photo. ☺
With so many traditional views along the port itself, I thought I’d use this opportunity to try a different perspective. Unfortunately the lines of sight were somewhat limited, but hopefully this puts a slightly new twist on these popular attractions. I intentionally used a large aperture and focused on the cathedral to try and create some distance with the compressed and vertical composition.
A great way to round out the day in Marseille, can’t complain about this kind of view and Mediterranean atmosphere!
Thanks for stopping by.

una foto coraggiosa, non era facile trovare il fuoco, la composizione mi piace molto, ma, secondo me, avresti dovuto mettere a fuoco i due signori in primo piano e lasciare sfocato lo sfondo.
In ogni caso trovo l'idea molto bella e originale.

I enjoy this view and the atmosphere you´ve created.
we get immediately an impression it´s well thought out shot and every component of it is placed perfectly in the frame.I must say I love the way you placed these two older men in the FG,who seems to admire and enjoy the view of Marseille.
And in the end I just have to mention about your excellent play with the depth-clear and sharp BG and a little bit "out of focus"men, which makes here the mood of this scene so unique.
Have a great sunday

What a nice view here! Really well seen and managed image taken from a very well selected POV to show us an interesting street life scene and fantastic architecture on the hill. Briliant concept as well as its execution! Bravo!
Have a nice Sunday!

You must have an enjoyable trip to France. You have posted excellent photos from this beautiful country.
In this photo you have created an excellent arrangement with superb view up to Notre Dame de la Garde, the famous Neo-Byzantine church in Marseille.
I like the view over the heads of two men sitting in front of you, enjoying the same view. The late afternoon light is superb, the vertical arrangement perfect.
Very well done.
Wish you a nice Sunday.
p.s. In order to satisfy your taste, I've posted one more façade photo with tighter crop. I hope you will like it. Thanks for all nice comments.

it is indeed different approach to photographing this place and I really like not only its originality but also the whole concept. The idea of placing two elderly men in the foreground works nicely with the title of the picture making it quite symbolical. Very nice POV and good perspective and the composition showing not only the architecture but also the some every day scene, which changed the character of the image.
Well done for the idea and its execution.

Hi Jason,a very nice choice of the moment, the atmopshere of the end of this day is truly beautiful watching your pic, great perspective made on different levels and great exposure too,i like it! Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

Nicely done with the two elderly when set in front of your camera, Jason, added life to the city view.
Well taken from sea(harbour) level up to the height of the basilica atop the mountain, it is an eyes catching element, prominently above town.
Maybe a horizontal format, I'd be choosing for such picture, but this is merely my taste.
Have a nice Sunday,

Like this candid shot and glorious view of the iconic cathedral that sits atop of Marseille. It has an almost comical appeal to it with two human domes contrasting so perfectly with that beauty placed upon the hill. Like your originality here and there is a lot to look at with the two gentleman anchoring the image quite effectively adding some interesting depth and scale. I hope you patted them both on the head as you left!!
Enjoy a peaceful Sunday.

Also these two gentlemen are a part of your picture, maybe a little bit peers of my.
You found a nice old place in your country, taken with depth and perspective.
The colours and structure are excellent constructed.
Also great quality and perfectly of colours.
A nice composition, excellent captured.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice Sunday,

Tu as bien su saisir l'atmosphère de fin de journée sur Marseille. J'aime bien la mise en scène avec les deux vieux qui regardent la Bonne Mère au loin sur sa montagne. J'aime bien la lumière sur le clocher.

Hi Jason - you made a great choice with your focus here, giving it to the scene and not to the two men who are enjoying it. The effect is cool, almost sitting us down next to them and enjoying the same thing they are. The cathedral is a gorgeous topper to the shot, but honestly it would be successful even without it - just two old men sitting and enjoying a day at the harbor. Thanks!

A nice title, and one which I see a couple of meanings for. Yes, the sun begins to set and darkness approaches, but in this moment a golden light bathes this beautiful view which has such depth. But also the men sitting there too, they don't look like spring chickens to me, so perhaps the Days End has two meanings? Then again, perhaps I totally wrong and they are actually monks...
I love the view up the hill to the old cathedral. It creates wonderful senses of openness and fresh air looking through this view.
Thanks as always!

This is a delightful composition filled with interesting details, from the elderly gentlemen in the foreground enjoying the same view as we, through the tourist "train", the boats in the harbour and right up to the magnificent cathedral on top of the hill. Actually, this is a better view than what the gentlemen get, since we also can watch them. We have a much nicer foreground :-).

Bravo!
Bonne semaine mon ami!

Very beautiful picture with special regards to the management of light, vertical format, chosen pov and composition!
I think this time those two guys were not a problem for the final result of this photograph!
TFS - congrats,

Yes, you did quite well. The masts and the tall buildings on the hill all point up at the church basking in the golden sun. Very well done, indeed!

J'aime beaucoup cette photo de Marseille avec au loin "la Bonne Mère" et les deux papy tonsurés en premier plan regardant vers le Vieux Port.
tyro (24386) 2014-04-07 1:35
What a lovely memory of Marseilles and what a nicely composed photograph too, the two "baldies" in the foreground adding some human interest and also, by their pose, directing our view across the sunlit marina and upwards to the magnificent building behind and above it.
Lovely light, colours and contrasts, perfect exposure and fine sharp focus on the distant view with the two men just slightly and nicely out of focus nearest to the camera.
Royaldevon (37927) 2014-04-07 3:12
The two men were luck in disguise, for they anchor the f/g, animate the f/g and set the view and the relaxed mood. This is a very well composed shot, nice horizontal layers and a lovely diagonal balance between the men in the f/g and the cathedral in the b/g.
Have a great day,
nikkitta (17066) 2014-04-07 13:39
Hola Jason, mi paligo amigo de Norte
A very good shot, well taken focusing at the far church and at the same time including the men also enjoying the view in a quiet way at the right place of the capture
Sometimes, just very few, when composing a photo a person appears to add the human touch, must be quick to catch them, here you were lucky to have them seated and unconscious of your presence
Cheers and this only time you deserve a... Coke
From the raining South
rogerl (1616) 2014-04-07 15:48
Jason, I just love this shot. The two men, bald heads perfectly matched, seem to be looking up at the building on the hill, as the rest of us are. The masts in the harbor lead the eye upwards to the top of the hill. Really nicely composed; it's just too bad that the sky wasn't more cooperative. Thanks.
fabianoleite (10820) 2014-04-07 16:26
The planned perspective and composition is very rich, with the two old men well placed and everything they're supposedly looking at, from the square nearby to the church on the top and in the distance. It makes us go all the way from the two points. Good work, congratulations!
emka (95249) 2014-04-07 19:47
yes, you were lucky to observe this nice scene. well selected vertical format and splendid composition. Beautiful church on the hill.
Warm regards from Tbilisi

Good balance between soft shades and hilights
I know this particular ambiance
Interesting perspective with the two guys
ourania (44326) 2014-04-13 8:56
you captured the Mediterranean colours and atmosphere in a delightfully precise way, they look so familiar and agreeable and make one of the fine qualities of your photo. A great composition with the reposing gentlemen and the cathedral at the opposite corners of the vertical frame and in between a lot of themes and details to captivate the glance and provide subjects for them to think and talk about. I also like the way you managed the depth and the light. A moment of leisure that feels timeless. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Hello dear friend
excellent the choice of this point of view
showing the high buildings in the background
and the church on the top of the mountain
the title is wellchosen too
I enjoy this view and the atmosphere
the height of the basilica is an eyecatching
