Here fishy fishy! I’m not a fan of a meal consisting of fish, but they sure make for great subjects to photograph…especially down along the Vieux Port in Marseille. If you do enjoy them, then this is surely the place to go for a fresh catch right off the boat…some of which are still flopping around.
If you can handle the “aroma’s” and other oddities that are sometimes caught along side, you can’t ask for a better spot to truly capture the daily life workings of this port city and its atmosphere. Another interesting aspect about this daily market is the system of sales…still being done by actual weights and measures by many of the vendors. In fact, what kind of money do fishermen make, you may ask?……why, “net profits” of course. :)
As you can see, everything comes whole…tails, scales and heads…glad I wasn’t looking for a hamburger at the time!? A fun and lively experience, and the best from my own was that the people working the stands didn’t seem to mind an ever present camera…as far as I could tell anyway. For all I know, this guy was actually reaching for a knife to shank me for getting up in his business.
Thanks for stopping by.

Well, what I´ve missed my friend-I´ll try to catch up with:)
This scene has really lovey Mediterranean feeling and mood you were able to capture and convey so well on this picture.I just hope he wasn´t really reaching for his knife:)If so,you have good evidence photo and we can sue him for good money:)You know you already have a good witness(even if I wasn´t there:)
But now seriously I must say I admire your intuition for such daily-life scenes.I think they can be even better memory for us than architectural, postcard shots as they evoke memories not only of the places, but also of the atmosphere.
Have a great day

Hello JAson ,
Beautiful fish , and not expensive at all ! Excellent light management and interesting effect of the wide angle .
CLODO (34096) 2014-04-02 0:57
Typical Marseille scene with the many fishes waiting to be sold, well taken thanks to the wide angle lens!

Now you know you should be eating more of our scaley friends rather than that corn fed beef you are so fond of! I am so tempted to make some jokes about "slabs" & "fillets" here but the mods would probably ban me from the site! Swimming on - I like your POV with all the little fishies pointing at the nasty man that caught them. It makes for a fascinating study and "captured" (;-) flawlessly. Light management and clarity are perfect and I particularly like the way you managed to get the name of the port included in the image. Well done.

A fishburger sounds just right for you!!
Love this composition!
Initially, the fish seem to swimming in a shoal; then the reality kicks in! You have given us a shot full of f/g details and with a b/g which provides a fine context.
Have a great day,

Warm greetings from southern Spain.

I love these guts selling fresh fish at source. In Kerala you can buy one on sea shore and the next restaurant will prepare it for you, but not only in India, in Portugal you can do it as well. Excellent view down to the fish selling stand in very good light. I think the man like his job, even he is still waiting for customers.
Very well done.
Sergiom (78667) 2014-04-02 5:55
J'en achèterais bien un, car il est très frais mais dans quoi le ferais-je cuire. Le port de Marseille est vraiment très beau à visiter et offre des points de vue intéressants et une lumière très provençale.
ikeharel (70753) 2014-04-02 7:13
This pic. is from time where the fish-population still was normal on the Mediterranean sea - nowadays the quantities catch has dwindled down substentially.
Anyway, chosen a nice POV, with the man seller stood on a sunny day close on the jetty, waiting for customers.
Fine blue table color, good view out to port, maybe you might had riased the camera bu just a bit.
saxo042 (37874) 2014-04-02 7:14
Indeed a good catch and I am sure these fishes will become very delicate meals for a lot of people who enjoy eating fish. Like me... A very attractive glimpse of daily life in this harbour.

Not expensive the price
Very nice local scene
I'll be in Marseille at the end of april

We may be of different opinions regarding the taste of fish, but I think we can agree that this is an enjoyable photo. Nice colours and a fine glimpse of daily life (and death).
I hope you got away from that man in another 1/200 seconds :-).
PaulVDV (28843) 2014-04-02 12:10
Not a fan of fish? But you certainly like blue.
Excellent daily life-picture with the fish displayed on the cart while we catch a glimpse of the place where the action is going on.
Best regards, Paul

What is it with you and food that I have to say, for the second time, "I just ate?" The theme of the week is foodstuff from Marseille, ey?
At any rate, although I just ate, I can still appreciate looking at the catch of the day. They would be excellent grilled over charcoal with a liberal helping of lemon juice.
emka (96565) 2014-04-02 13:32
HI jason, I am also a fan of fish markets, they are attractive plays for photos. amusing composition.

Like these daily life scenes of markets and ports where you see what locals eat, real life in a word and good food also, for those like me that love fish and not hamburgers with Coke
Well presented capture of the fish in a deep blue??? table, seems they are still in the water
The man dangerous, he has the su on his facer, going to work , my idea, not to threaten a kind, pale tourist
Like truly tghe BG with sea and boats
Well done, good note
Congrats and tak care of ...people from the desert

a pleasant and interesting scene from the old port of Marseille. Living in a small island of the Aegean, I see scenes like this every day, only with less boats in the background and less fish in the foreground:) Fortunately, I don't mind the smell at all and am grateful for the fishermen's "legendary" patience with photographers. I like very much the depth and dynamism you gave to the foreground and how this is balanced by the human presence, the deep background and its bright light and colours. You've captured superb details all over, a thorough presentation of the port, including reflections. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Noel_Byrne (31006) 2014-04-05 5:50
great fishy catch, in both meanings! Even though I hate fish with all my soul, you are right that it makes an interesting subject to photo, with the cool silvery and rainbow colors. I like a lot how you composed this scene too, especially the proof fisherman at the head of three shot. Catch of the day!
You know it's weird that being an island dweller I hate fish so much but funny enough a lot of Irish are the same. I put mine down partially to the time I was bitten by a seal near a fishing pier, over never been able to break the association
COSTANTINO (64788) 2014-04-05 22:05
Hello my dear friend

Gidday dear ADB
How's it going? I've been AWOL but now that Mum's out of hospital, will hopefully have more time for TEíng. Love this one, not just because of the subject and the fish, but because of how you used the wide angle lens to exaggerate the perspective, I like the blue caste to the photo and the wonderful definition the fish have, with a stunning graphism.
Nice work, thanks for sharing, have a lovely weekend
Waylim (25502) 2014-04-18 8:52
Sorry, been away for a while.
Once I got to you gallery, I smelled something fishy. First I thought it was you new funny profile photo, funny. Than I realize it was this image on the randow display that make that smell. Nice daily life image from this part of the world. We tend to associate this type of image to be from the third world countries. I guess we can go to the fisherman Warf and find this kind of places here too. I just have to remeber to bring my camera.

Do you don't like a fish meal? Really? Anyway I like this photo. You are right, it's great subjects to photograph! Very clever composition, the fish make good graphic scene for the foreground (looks good in the thumbnail). Thanks for so interesting note, another nostalgic report from France.
Best wishes from rainy Ural town,
