One view.
Another view.

The nave of the cathedral of Marseille, shows flags of various old province of France, the flag of which of Poitou, red with its five towers, a flag and a province which are very dear to me. Not to confuse with the flag of Poitou-Charentes, very dear also.

The cathedral of Marseille, set up as MINOR BASILICA of Sainte-Marie-Majeure by the pope Léon 13, 1810-1903, in 1896, be dedicated in 1897. Between the Vieux-Port of Marseille and the grand port maritime de Marseille, the SAINTE-MARIE-MAJEURE CATHEDRAL of Marseille, or the CATHEDRAL OF LA MAJOR, 19th century, of romano-Byzantine style, built from 1852 till 1893. Classified as "Historic Monument" since 1906.

The cathedral brought up on a plan in the shape of latin cross, of a longeur of 146 meters, is surmounted by a dome 18 meters, 70 meters in height, whereas its bell towers have 60 meters in height. The used materials are various and of various colors, as the marble and the porphyre.

It is the prince-president Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, 1808-1873, on September 26th, 1852, who laid the foundations of a construction wished by the bishop Eugène de Mazenod, 1782-1861, and realized by the architects Léon Vaudoyer, 1803-1872, Jacques Henri Esperandieu, 1829-1874, also architect of Notre-Dame de la Garde, and Henri Antoine Révoil, 1822-1900.

The cathedral has involved the partial destruction of the previous cathedral of Marseille, named the church of La vieille Major, romane, 11th 12th centuries, which is built on the site of a previous early Christian church of the 5th century, and a baptistery.
