A close-up on the fountain that stands in the Place de la République in the southern French city of Arles.
Arles is a city and commune in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, of which it is a subprefecture. It is located in the former province of Provence.
A large part of the Camargue is located on the territory of the commune, making it the largest commune in Metropolitan France in terms of territory. The city has a long history, and was of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981. The Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles in 1888–1889 and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there.

I had to laugh when I first viewed this remarkably sharp close-up of the fountain. The figurehead is spurting water from his mouth whilst the lateral sprays give the impression that the water is emerging from his ears!
The normal shot would be to stand back and give a view of the whole fountain but I think this close-up, showing excellent textural details, too, works really well. There is still enough peripheral information to understand its location and atmosphere.
Have a great day,

Hello Stephen - The spouting-mouthed head is the dominating feature of this shot and it is wonderfully coloured in its verdigris oxidisation. I do like the way you have composed the shot with only a section of the fountain visible and that solidly placed in the frame. Either side we see DL and the context of the shot. A creative and well considered shot. Warm regards Rosemary

now that is a most impressive fountain,I like the way that water appears to be gushing out of both sides as well as the ornate head.
The surrounding people add a nice human element and do give a fine sense of scale.

I remember my childhood emotions, when I saw similar fountains... What beauty or useful in the water came outside a man?
Attractive postcard, fine real vivid colors.

Most notable element on the picture is with no-doubt the fountain's head. Bronze erosion gave the light-green/tourquise color's.
Assuming it has 4 sides, the fountain is an interesting location in town.
Fine clear view upon, a bit obsecuing the edifice behinde with the flags, maybe a POV from a distance could show more. Or alternatively, A close-up on the fountain itself would be a good idea.
Nevertheless, as I naver been to Arles, I find this an intriguing photo.

As usual an interesting note to an interesting picture.I have seen this head somewhere before, but can`t remember where.
The inclusion of people give scale to the fountain.
Kind regards Gladys.
P.S Thankyou for your comments on my last post.I feel I sometimes have improved ( probably because of tips from Les) but I am now using a tripod as I cannot hold the camera steady enough to get clear ,and sharp pics ( I have Parkinsons)The tripod is making a difference but is cumbersome and not always easy to set up.
Best Wishes Gladys.

I like that you have made such perfect eye contact with the fountain, he looks as if he is spitting the water out of the frame! Nice scene that it sits in too, perfect context for it that we can see the fine architecture and the busy plaza behind.
Nice one, cheers

Here, I saw a funny situation when pigeons stood in line to take a bath in the water.
They entered under the stream of the water one after the other over and over again :-)
I'm not fluent in English but it's understandable, I suppose :-))
I like this composition and the close-up of the element of the obelisk and the fountain.
Have a nice week,

a very interesting composition, a clear close up to the fountain that allows a partial but attractive and eloquent view to the square and the surrounding architecture as well. I like the framing and how the top of the fountain rises up to the top of the building behind it. There's a fine graphical impact thanks to a very apt contrast management, the light and the colours are lovely. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,

Hi Stephen. An impressive photo. The beautiful and artistically valuable Fountain Head a true sight. The area around the fountain is well integrated into the overall composition.
