A view of the Place de la République in the southern French city of Arles. A centre of tourist activity, it is home to the City Hall, two churches, including the former cathedral of Saint Trophime off frame on the left and a monumental obelisk and fountain.
Arles is a city and commune in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, of which it is a subprefecture. It is located in the former province of Provence.
A large part of the Camargue is located on the territory of the commune, making it the largest commune in Metropolitan France in terms of territory. The city has a long history, and was of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981. The Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles in 1888–1889 and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there.

Hello Stephen - While I like this composition very much I think the light was really difficult to managed with a big contrast between the shade and brilliance of the sunlit areas. I wonder if it is possible to bring out a little more detail in the buildings on the LHS as the features are a little indistinct? IMO, if the light was a little more balanced the shot would show off the atmosphere and relaxed feel of the location to advantage. Warm regards Rosemary

Une bonne prise de vue de cette place d'Arles sous cette luminosité.Également bon rendu des détails dans la partie à l'ombre à droite de l'image.La flaque d'eau attire le regard!

another nice architecture shot here. Like your composition. You left some place in foreground to enjoy its beauty. Sharp shot, nicely presented with some people in FG. Thanks for sharing.

I know this place perfectly. I was in Arles Van Gogh's town many times. Sometimes there was a man who sang opera songs. Wonderful presentation of this place (Arles is my favourite town in Provence)
Best regards, leszek

a charming and wonderful shot of this Plaza which is so rich in architectural beauty and character. Can see why it is a place for tourists to throng to, it is wonderful and captured perfectly in this strong and flawlessly managed light.

So much to attract the eye here, no wonder its a centre of attraction for tourists! The various buildings seem to speak of a long history here, seeing as they appear of very different ages, and an obelisk is always a nice addition to a plaza. The obelisk seems to be a little lop sided, I hope its not falling over! The flags on the building to the right make a great color addition, and the reflections in the puddle brighten up the darker area perfectly. Nice one!

That looks like two colour tone shot, grey and blue, but it works well thanks to the sun and shadow management and the people included in the shot. Good photo shot.

splendid composition of this beautiful square. Beautiful fountain with lions, nice city hall. beautiful sunny day but there is a puddle with reflections. Harsh light conditions but you did very well. And so many little scenes with the people. Very attractive photo.

un bel luogo ed una bella composizione che lo varizza appieno, il tutto con i colori delicati che ami mettere nelle tue foto.
Una bella ed originale macchia di colore viene anche dalla pozzanghera che vivacizza l'immagine.
Ciao e buona serata

wow...i don't think i've EVER seen so many people in one of your photo's before! haha
If we add up your last 100 photos I bet the people in them don't add up to what we see here :)
beautiful shot of the square, the activity, the architecture and the colors, I really enjoyed it.

a picture with great depth and perspective, with fine structure and a lot of interest. The light is very strong but what's amazing is how it's being reflected on all the lightly coloured surfaces and its impact is enhanced so much. You've captured the details of the architecture and the people's movement very effectively. The contrast of the shady part is very nice, you've brought an agreeable touch of light in it through the reflection. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

My first knowledge of Arles, Stephen, is from Georges Bizet "L'Arlesienne", and always remember the sweeping flow of music in this piece.
Fine square with the fountain, buildings from three diff. era's with the Hotel-de-ville as impressive eyes catching edifice on photo.
People stroll on, but no even one tree planted anywhere there to add some green.
A fine detailed and clear picture. Well done my friend.
