The castle of Najac 12th 13th centuries. Classified Historic building in 1925.

Its situation with the top of the valley of Aveyron and its architecture evoke the power.
It was built on an old castle, château-fort, of the 12th century, including one old square keep of 10 side meters makes office, in South-west, of turn of angle of a rectangular enclosure.
As from 1253, the curtain walls were raised, until reaching 26 meters. The enclosure was flanked of five grosses towers to cylindrical prominence. One distinguishes easily largest 11 meters in diameter which reaches 40 meters and was used as keep. Long arrow slits reaches the not very common length of 6.80 meters.

1100: Foundation by the counts of Toulouse.
1196: The castle belongs to the count de Toulouse Raymond VI.
1214: During the Crusade against Albigois, Simon de Montfort seizes Najac.
1249: To the death of the count de Toulouse Raymond VII, its lands pass to his son-in-law Alphonse of Poitiers, brother of king of France Louis IX.
1271: To the death of Alphonse of Poitiers, the old territories of the counts de Toulouse are allocated to king of France Philippe III the Bold one.
1572: The Huguenot ones take the castle.
1590: Henri IV king of France, makes take again the castle.
Given up at the 17th century, it will be used as stone quarry of the French revolution until the 19th century.

Since the 12th 13th centuries, the village, a borough castral, extends along a ridge above a bend in the Aveyron river, at the bottom of castle which ensured the defense of the valley.
In 1252, to thwart the town of Najac, seat of the seneschalsy of Rouergue remained too faithful to the county of Toulouse after the takeover of Capétiens, Alphonse of Poitiers decided to create to few kilometers, a new city, to fix at it the seat of his administration, and frank, i.e. equipped with tax exemptions, which broke the prosperity and the influence of Najac, from where the name of Villefranche-de-Rouergue given to this bastide, in french, distant of 16 kilometers.

Najac is a french commune, located in the department of Aveyron of the Midday-Pyrenees area, populated of 744 Najacois in 1999, distributed out of 54 km², that is to say 14 hab./km².

The village and its famous castle overhang the gorges of Aveyron from its left bank.

Najac, one of the Most beautiful Villages of France, is also classified like Pays of Art and History.
