A night time view of Albi, with the massive cathedral of Saint-Cecile dominating the River Tarn and the Pont Vieux.

Sainte Cécile cathedral, claimed to be the world's largest brick construction is an acknowledged masterpiece of the Southern Gothic style. It is characterized by the unexpected and strong contrast between its austere exterior with its defensive lines and its sumptuous interior decoration. Built as a statement of the Christian faith after the upheavals of the Cathar heresy, the building has been much embellished over the centuries: notably with the Dominique de Florence Doorway and the 78 metre high bell tower, the Baldaquin, built over the entrance (1515–1540).
