Photographer’s Note

Au XIIIe siècle, Albi est au coeur de l'hérésie cathare. Lorsqu'en 1277 l'initiative est prise de construire la cathédrale Sainte Cécile, le catharisme est en voie de résorption sous l'effet d'une violente répression. Néanmoins, jugeant la situation encore instable, les catholiques, maîtres de la ville depuis peu de temps, décident d'édifier une cathédrale-forteresse qui doit être une démonstration de leur puissance. Celle-ci est idéalement placée sur un promontoire rocheux qui surplombe la vallée du Tarn d'une trentaine de mètres.
Avec ses fenêtres hautes et étroites comme des meurtrières, Sainte Cécile d'Albi semble prête à soutenir un siège. La première pierre est posée en 1282 et le choeur est consacré en 1480 : les campagnes de construction du gros-oeuvre se sont donc étendues sur deux siècles. A la fin du XVe, on élève les trois derniers étages du clocher, qui ne figuraient pas sur les plans initiaux (on désirait alors que la tour ne dépasse pas le reste de l'édifice). A cette période, on ajoute également le jubé, rompant avec l'idée d'unité du volume. Enfin, en 1509, on fait appel à des peintres italiens pour la décoration intérieure (ces peintures, encore splendides, n'ont jamais été restaurées).
Pendant la Révolution, certaines statues du jubé ont subi des dégradations, mais, dans son ensemble, la cathédrale a été plutôt épargnée. En 1843, à l'occasion de la restauration de la toiture, on ajoute un bandeau à faux mâchicoulis avec un chemin de ronde et quelques tourelles, ce qui accentue l'allure de forteresse.

Hi Jan,
The first thing to come in my mind on seeing this picture was "WOW!". Fantastic POV. The tiny people at the foot of the castle provide good scale of comparison of the castle's massiveness. First I couldn't understand the notes you had written. I, then, used the translation tool and found your notes very useful. Thanks for sharing.

Splendid building, with the fuil gothic elements like the high windows and the timpane and arches on the left and still some of the round and firm romanic forms remaining in the ship and the tower in the middle.

wow, no to mi na kościół ani katedrę nie wygląda raczej, to niczym jakiś pojazd kosmiczny z nieudanego filmu sci-fi z lat 70ych ubiegłego stulecia :-))
a tak na serio - podoba się niezmiernie, chyba jeden z baardziej monumentalnych obiektów sakralnych jakie widziałem;
ciekawe;
próbowałeś jakoś "prostować" na bokach?

Zdumiewający jest ten kadr. Jeżeli nie jest to połączenie dwóch pionowych zdjęć, to nie mam pytań..
Praktycznie nie dostrzegam dystorsji, widzę natomiast kawał potężnej architektury. I taka myśl przychodzi mi do głowy - kto w tym mocno zlaicyzowanym kraju zapełnia takie monumentalne mury ??

A well composed shot of this great cathedral. The crisp clear image allows one to discern every fine detail of the exterior. The POV conveys the massive bulk and dimensions, while also displaying the structure's symmetrical features. I like your minimal foreground so that the cars do not unduly distract. katedra wygl±da gigantycznie, zw³aszcz z tej perspektywy. Ja s³ysza³em, ¿e najwiêksza kupa cegie³ to malborski zamek, chyba racja. Tutaj te¿ nie brakuje. Fajne kolory, ³adnie nasycone niebo.

Impressive sky and building, but I can't understand why you kept the cars in the frame. The WS composition is better for me.
