Photographer’s Note

The steam train of the Cévennes in southern France runs between Anduze and St Jean-du-Gard, allowing the traveller to enjoy beautiful sites during the journey.
Amongst these is "La Bambouseraie", a 15ha bamboo plantation unique in Europe, which was planted by Eugène Mazel in 1856, a trader in spices who was also a passionate of botany.
However, to realise that, he had to undertake enormous works like the diversion of several subsidiaries of the river Gardon, an enterprise which eventually ruined him, so he had to give up his park to the bank "Crédit Foncier". I presume this diversion of rivers is not very good from an ecological point of view either!
The trees on my photo are still young, but in most of the park, you feel as if you were in a south-east Asian jungle.
This view probably doesn't exist any longer, 16 years later, as the train must be hidden by the grown trees. (1 metre a day in some cases!)
The train drops you there to enjoy the visit of the plantation and then picks you up again to finish the ride to St Jean-du-gard and back to Anduze.

The railway was originally used from 1881 while the silk industry was thriving in the region. The opening of the line was a real challenge in this mountainous region, and it required the building of several engineering masterpieces, like a metal-bridge, 4 tunnels and 5 stone viaducts.
The line managed to run until 1971, when it had to close for economic reasons.
However, the train was back on track by 1982 thanks to a voluntary association. The community of communes around, are now running it for the greatest pleasure of tourists.

This is a scan of a picture dating back to 1993, hence the medium quality. I had added it in WS of my previous post, and Joël (jlbrthnn) made me realise the exotic atmosphere of the place; so, I decided to republish it as a main post. I hope you will enjoy it!

Bonjour Marie-Louise,
Le petit train s'en va dans la campagne... comme dans la chanson. Le cadre de la forêt de bambous crée en effet une ambiguité dans la situation. J'aime cette image qui donne une sensation de train miniature. Une image authentique, de qualité et intéressante. Bravo.

Hello Marie Louise,

The train reminds me of the Orient Express, even if it is in the wrong location!
It is always a pleasure to observe working steam engines even if they are terribly bad at utilizing the energy in the coal hehehe....
So this is a bamboo plantation? I guess the next step will be to keeep pandas, right? Hehehehe...

Oui, même le train a quelque chose de l'Asie du Sud-Est. La photo a une bonne qualité, même à partir de scanning. J'ai été surpris de lire que c'est de 1993.

Sono a casa per qualche giorno e non posso fare a meno di controllare TE!
Hai fatto bene a pubblicare questa foto perchè per paesaggio, colori e atmosfera è sia originale e interessante. Ciò che mi piace di più è il bel trenino in mezzo a questo verde lussureggiante, proprio come in Asia. La qualità dell'immagine è abbasatanza buona pur essendo un scansione, mi colpisce sopratutto il contrasto, la saturazione cromatica e la nitidezza.
Complimenti anche per l'ottima nota informativa.

Salut Marie-Louise,

En fait, il a un certain air de SE Asia, Indochine, peut-être, qui a été colonisée par le français.

C'est une jolie vue, bien composée et admirablement numérisée, avec une bonne luminosité et couleurs, qui contribuent beaucoup pour le donner l'air d'Asie tropicale.

J'ai lu ta note, trés intéressante et informative, comme d'habitude, avec attention et je m'interroge si les constructeurs de cette ligne n'ont pas été les mêmes que de la ligne de la locomotive que j'ai posté comme WS de ton poste antérieur, car cette ligne a été construite par des français juste quelques années plus tard et elle a aussi plusieurs viaducs parce que tout son parcours est montagneux.

Je remarque, sur cet intéressant scan, que le passage de ce train à vapeur est une attraction bien suivi à en croire ces personnes dans cette bambouseraie... Je ne sais pas si aujourd'hui on verrait aussi bien la loco car en plus de 15 ans le bambou aura bien poussé !!! Lumineux coup d'oeil et merci pour la note Marie-Louise.

Ce train d'une autre époque qui traverse une plantation de bambous c'est des plus dépaysant et ton titre le dit bien. On découvre actuellement qu'on peut tout faire avec cette plante jusqu'aux lames de plancher.

now nice it is to see such a photo! :) I like this view very much!
First, about the quality: for a scanned image it is a good image! I noticed the "medium quality" only in the sky :) But it can easily be adjusted in Photoshop. Frankly speaking, I very much like this image because it has a good sense of depth: warm colours of the FG which gradually become colder until they become quite "cold" in the very distance! In general, a very lovely, interesting view!

J'aime bien le petit train sur le remblai. En revanche, un peu dommage pour lajardin toutesces clôtures ou espaliers, un peu voyant dans l'image. Le scann est peut être un peu accentué (j'ai aussi tendance à faire du "cryspy" quand l'ai la main lourde sur la netteté).

Imaginez le son du sifflet réfléchi par les parois de la montagne qui entourent cette vallée!

This is really historic and very exotic picture. The old-fashioned train goes in such unusual surroundings. The composition is perfectly good and the quality seems to be pretty good as for pre-digital image. You definitely have a very valuable photograph collection.

bonita imagen con un toque retro, en la que la locomotora a vapor empuja este tren en un paisaje con la plantación de bambú que podría ser del sud-este asiático, como dices en el título de la foto.
A pesar de sus 16 años y del proceso de escaneado, la imagen conserva su frescura y una calidad apreciable.
