Photographer’s Note

The "faïsse" or "faysse" is the name given to the cultivated terrace in some southern regions, among them are the Cévennes. They are witnesses of the hard work needed to get off the stones from the ground in order to cultivate it, hard work of stowing, building, keeping up the cultures in remote places.

In the Cévennes, farms and little villages down the valleys or on the slopes, are surrounded by thousands of faïsses.

In the past, those faïsses were well preserved and used to cultivate cereals, vine, mulberry trees, fruit trees.
Nowadays, they're often buried under brambles, genette, holm oak and chestnut trees.
The walls are ruined rain after rain without anyone to rebuild them.
