A Castle in the Vineyards Photo

Photographer’s Note

Montalba le Chateau is a small village of the Eastern Pyrenean region. It is built around a small hill and protected by a quite impressive stronghold. To find the origins of the place, we have to look back to the prehistoric times (-2200 to -1800) during which megalithes were build in the area. The castle itself was built in the IXth century. It quickly became a very important place and was used as a military border defense area (to protect the region against attacks and inversely, to send troups to invade the Catalan cities), until 1659.
I was really impressed while I discovered this village, in the middle of the vineyards, on its granitic hill, and under such a beautiful sky.

Montalba le Chateau est un beau village des Pyrénées Orientales. Il est bâtit sur une colline où l'habitat remonterait à la préhistoire (-2200-1800 ans, des mégalithes ont été retrouvés sur place), et est protégé par un impressionnant chateau fort. Le chateau lui même a été initié au IXeme siecle et est rapidement devenu un poste frontière prevenant des attaques contre le Roussillon et, inversement servant à préparer des incursions en vue de conquêtes, jusqu'en 1659 et le traité des Pyrénées (si j'ai bien compris la leçon d'histoire)...
J'avoue que j'ai été très impressionné en découvrant cet endroit, perdu sur son promontoire granitique, au milieu des vignes et sous ce ciel magique!

awesome photo. Simply awesome.

Could be captured from many different POV's for many photo's just as stunning (with or without the vinyard, etc) but your angle is very dramatic. I possibly would have walked forward & to the left & zoomed in a little to remove some of the terrain on the right side, which is a little dull/distracting compared to the vinyard, castle & clouds.

la scène est magnifique mais c'est surtout cette petite soucoupe volante sur le chateau qui est intéresante.

Great photo, Loïc. A grand castle in the magnificent vineyard surroundings, very well presented by your well-framed photograph. The cloud hovering above the castle, and the vivid colors in the atmospheric light all are good assets of this shot that strengthen the visual impact. The wine plants and vineyard poles deliver a good foreground graphism, and the very deep DOF works well. This should make a fine wallhanger when printed in big size.

Salut Loic,
the entrance of the capture with the lines of the grapes changing to a field by the distance leads the eye to the fortified village. Wonderful presented on the hill in good light and with an interesting sky. I like the colours and clear view.

Un moment rare,le nuage semble être l'âme du château...placé comme ça devant ce ciel sombre...c'est trop fort,je regrette le format un peu réduit sûrement a cause de la compression que tu voulais contenir,les feuilles du vignoble sont autant de détails qui prennent beaucoup d'espace dans les fichiers (je ne le sais que trop bien)tu as trouvé un bon compromis...

J'aime bien voir ton travail sur des édifices de France. Les tulipes sont rares, mais il y a les vignes en premier plan et un ciel magnifique au dessus du non moins magnifique château. Très bien réalisé. Bravo.

Le lenticulaire est idéalement placé sur le chateau et cela donne beaucoup de cachet à cette superbe photo. De très belles couleurs sous cette lumière bien captée.

Nuages lenticulaires surmontant le château ? pas complètement, mais presque. Ces superbes nuages mêlés à un ciel gris ardoise font ressortir à merveille ce vignoble et cette butte fortifiée.

Un fabuleux point de vue sur un lieu riche en histoire et surtout joliment gratifié d'un superbe lenticulaire, quelle chance. Les couleurs, notamment dominées par le beau vert des vignes, et la lumière sont très belles. Bien vu Loïc et merci pour la note.

permets moi de decouvrir en premier ce superbe lenticulaire dont la stratigraphie n'a pu laisser le géologue indifferent. c'est vraiment la cerise sur le gateau !
l'endorit est splendide, le chateau superbe, mais ce nuage honore merveillerusemnt ta composition.
une image comme je les aime !

Le paysage est interessant, lumineux et attrayant avec ces vielles pierres... et puis le positionnement du nuage est génial (un bon coup de chance pour le photographe)

une grande composition ici, mon ami.
J'aime bien comment tu combines la beauté du château sur la colline, avec le graphisme des vignes qui l'entourent et avec la grande plasticité du ciel, qui a quelques beaux nuages peignés par le vent.
Une belle image, avec une bonne lumière et quelques couleurs splendides.

Hi Loic - awesome timing, nice subject to begin with, but the lenticular clouds above really make it special, it seems as if this modest hill has generated this cloud.

Le village enchasse au milieu des vignes a l'air sympa mais la ce qui fait la photo pour moi c'est ce beau gros nuage (un quasi lenticulaire non ?) pose pile poil au dessus, en fait il vole vraiment la vedette au chateau, faudra quand meme que tu reviennes une autre fois faire la photo sans le nuage qu'on puisse s'attarder plus sur cet interessant chateau ;-)

L'endroit est magnifique et ce nuage lenticullaire qui domine le château est incroyable. As-tu fait aussi un plan plus serré incluant uniquement le château et le nuage ?

The quality is fantastic with excellent detail and sharpness. I love the way the lenticular(?) cloud is hanging over the castle. the entire sky is amazing.

A very nice scene. I like your composition with the vineyards leading to the castle but most of all the lenticular cloud above the castle makes this image. Bravo, well done.

Loïc bonjour.
Le nuage en forme de soucoupe volante semble protéger et désigner le château. La lumière est exceptionnelle et met en valeur l'édifice. Tu aurais pu donner une plus grande dimension à la photo, non ?

Excellent place to stop for a photo of the castle on the hilltop and with a good inclusion of the foreground vineyards. A place of interest to visit by another chance..

Belle vue mais ce qui attire ici bien sûr c'est la "soucoupe volante" pile poil au-dessus du chateau!! peut-être une rencontre du 3ieme type...Il s'agit d'un altocumulus lenticularis.

Hello Loic.
I just had another look in your gallery - it's very impressive. This is a wonderful landscape, with the slightly under-exposed look that I like. The colours are rich and the light is very gentle. The choice of using the vines in the foreground was very good, as the silver/white posts catch the sunlight and make strong patterns. Marvellous view of the castle under a great sky.
