Beaucaire is a commune in the Gard department in Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France. Located on the Rhône River, it sits opposite the town of Tarascon (photographs of which I have already posted), which is in Bouches-du-Rhône department of Provence,.
In Roman times, Beaucaire was sited along the Via Domitia, the first Roman road built in Gaul.
During the Albigensian Crusade, Raymond VI of Toulouse besieged Beaucaire in May 1216. The efforts of Simon de Montfort to relieve the town were repulsed and the city fell after a three-month siege.
At the end of the Hundred Years War in 1453, Charles VII of France declared that Beaucaire would become the site of the Foire de la Madeleine, a commercial fair that would enable the trade of goods from all of the Mediterranean Basin countries to all of France. By the mid seventeenth century, the Fair was the largest commercial fair in the Mediterranean region, exceeding in six days the total volume of trade done in Marseilles in a year. It remained the dominant Mediterranean trade fair until the arrival of the railroad in the mid nineteenth century at which time Napoleon III removed its tax-free status. One result of these years of commercial dominance was the construction of a remarkable number of architecturally significant mansions and palaces by rich merchants of many nationalities.

Good Morning Stephen - Another quiet corner with much to enjoy here. You manage to find the most delightful out-of-the-way places for your shots. Here the composition invites the viewer to stroll down the narrow lane to the sunlit area in the rear. Well managed light and a pleasing harmonious palette of colours. The blue and grey shutters make a super feature here. Have a lovely Sunday Rosemary

oh I'm sure Daniel will enjoy this one!
He really likes his narrow-street-photos.
nice to see the window shutters open for a change too.
and it seems like there are some locals standing by, not tourists, thats even better aswell.
smart perspective lines, good depth and of course i like the overall subject.

And this new shot from beaucaire. Beautiful narrow street and how well mthat the cars are not allowed here. They ruin the views of so many p[laces. beautiful atmosphere of the hot summer day. Fantastic play of lights and shadows. The presence of the people enlivens the picture.

A very nice perspective, the facades are very impressive, its like the walls of a castle around that street.
The presence of persons gives the feeling to share the quietude of that street.
I appreciate the bright light and the contrast between the saturated color of the shutters and the whiteness of the walls.
I wish you a quit Sunday,

Encore une ville qui mérite une visite pour pouvoir remonter le temps.
J'aime beaucoup l'ambiance générale qui se dégage de cette composition;

A great composition with nice contrast between the blue eaves, doors, sky and plain coloured buildings. I always wonder what it would be like to live in a place like this. So many of your shots make me dream...thanks for that.

This looks like a very cool place to go exploring, I would imagine looking hard would present the photographer many wonderful opportunities to shoot. This is a great scene too, the two people suit the image perfectly, and the contrast of the light and shaded part of the street is great.
All the best

Interesting notes accompany your shot. A tax-free haven sounds like such an attraction!
Your aspect, with converging lines, guiding right to the focal arch and figure, is very effective. Despite the shady nature of the narrow street, the details and the textures are easily accessible. I do like how the colour blue features so well, linking all areas of the shot. We normally look for red but, here, blue was a definite advantage.
Have a great day,

a wonderful presentation of this old, picturesque neighbourhood. Although all of the ground floor doors are closed, it's great to see some open windows above. I like very much the powerful perspectives, the clear definition of the repeating architectural elements and patterns, the strong focal point of the arch and the continuation of the alley beyond it. There's a very pleasant clarity and a fine lighting balance. There are natural and harmonious tones both in the illuminated parts and in the shade. The people add interest and it's funny to see how the colours of their clothes match those of the surroundings:) Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Buona giornata e buon proseguimento

Excellent linear perspective, sharpness and shadow detail. The cobble-stoned alley leads the eye deep into the image and the people add scale and context. I like the repetition of the posts and the arched bridge in the bg nicely positioned over the vanishing point. Bon semaine!

Beau rendu de la lumière dans cette ruelle.Bien les deux personnes qui habillent cette composition.Une belle variation de bleus qui créent le bon contraste avec les teintes claires de ces façades.

Lovely and beautiful picture!
Large vertical format, exposure, soft colors, sharpness, chosen pov and composition really pleased me... they're excellent!
TFS - congrats,

Très jolie ruelle de pavés et d'ancienne façades avec l'arche, les volets bleus, jeu ombre et de lumière sous un beau ciel bleu, très belle présentation
ikeharel (43903) 2013-10-03 4:40
Excelent clear view in depth onto the alley, Stephen.
The blue windows shutters on the shaded side are in contrast to the white/off-white color of the shutters on the lightened side. Sun rays affect colors texture.
Nice view over typical old town's.
