Photographer’s Note

Unlike it might seem, this is not a fashion show photograph. The lady is a Brazilian samba dancer moving frenetically, as if the dance itself was the only way to exorcise all the sadness she could have ever felt.

Whenever they wear something more than a string, Brazilians usually choose bright vivid colours to dress when they’re up to a few steps of samba. I love Brazilian music and although I personally prefer the sounds of some Bahia well known musicians, or the jazz fusion sessions inspired by Bossa Nova, I think that Samba (as a dance and as a style of music) may be particularly representative of this nation’s culture in the link with its African roots.

Thank you Brazil for the colours and rhythm you bring into the World.

whata big jaw, but apart from that, the movement you have caught is wonderful, the colours are good and the face is very clear.

This really captures the sense of movement, what is especially nice is that her head and shoulders are still and sharp, whilst the dress is moving and blurred. To get the exact timing of this picture with a Powershot P&S is particularly impressive given the delay that usually occurs between pressing the shutter and the camera taking the picture.

Très jolie tourbillon coloré, malgrés le mouvement de la danceuse, tous les détails du visage ressortent merveilleusement bien; Très belle prise de vue, avec un bon cadrage.

Missed out again. When I first saw the thumbnail I was puzzled, and still would have been if you hadn't skillfully managed to get her face in focus leaving everything in a frantic motion blur. Lovely shot it shows the nature of this dance extremely well.

Tenho mesmo que parabenizá-lo pela excelente imagem, Gal. A linha da mandíbula ficou esecialmente bonita e forte. e a composição ficou excelente, com tudo em rosa contra o fundo escuro.

isso posto, volto para sua foto: a seriedade da moça me surpreende agradavelmente: é um clichè ver mulatas bonitas e seminuas sorrindo e rebolando quando dançam... você pegou um momento de concentração e esforço (é uma dança que realmente exige do corpo) e a torção do tronco está muito elegante.
um agradável surpresa, muito linda.

Marvellous shot! My greatest compliment to you goes to the fact that you managed to get good sharpness of the face while the rest is in motion. The moment is also nice, with her hair "flaring" up. I would clone out something white at the top right corner.

What dynamism Gal! This is a very distinctive composition made all the more remarkable by the fact everything appears to be moving EXCEPT her face, which you've captured to perfection. You appear to be up close and personal, giving you an excellent PoV for this image. Fine work and very much in the spirit of the music you celebrate.

Extraordinaire le mouvement de ce corps drapé de rose une belle image. Moi ce que je préfère c'est le visage tendu entouré de cheveux fous qui nous montre cette saine agressivité de la dance et ce besoin d'exprimer toute ces choses qui doivent être retenues dans la vie.Ciao\jr

hi Gal :) I am back and I have seen your beautiful pictures of course...
I smiled at your comment about Bossa Nova..when I recently proposed it for a commercial to one of my young directors, he asked me what it was..:) he said he thought it was a holiday place in Spain :))...good age ours, isn't it ?

very nice motion blur..I like the two big pink patches on the left and right, triangled with her tiny and strong face, head, flying hair...
