Photographer’s Note

The art of fresco is an ancient art. Corsica is a rich architectural heritage Romanesque art. The island has experienced in the years 1450 to 1520 an outbreak of artists island and many accomplishments. The Middle Ages saw art as a teaching. The images painted became the bible of the poor. The technique of fresco use colours délayées powder with water and applied to a coating of wet mortar made of lime and sand. A glaze fixed everything.
The frescoes in the Chapel St Michel in the village of Castirla date back to the XVth sc. They were restored for the first time in 1964 by the Historic Monuments. Today, they are included in the programme of restoration of the territorial authority of Corsica because they are in very poor condition. It is not only the frescoes, the roof of the building threat. I made photos quickly because I will not enter, but the sky did not fall on my head, not yet!
In the apse, a Christ in Majesty, sitting on a throne, door or an open book we read "Ego sum mundi lux et veritas and via vita." It is surrounded by the symbols of the evangelists: to the right of Christ, from the bottom up, the lion Saint Marc, the eagle St. John; to his left, from the bottom up, the bull Saint Luke and Saint Matthew the angel.
In the lower register of the apse are the twelve apostles whose names parade on a strip of separation. In the triumphal arch, the tradition of the Annunciation is observed: the angel Gabriel, the Virgin Mary and the dove.
