Photographer’s Note

Today I present a listed monument to you which missed in my series on Calenzana: the Confrérie Sainte-Croix.

This building which is near and faced the Vault Confrerie Sainte-Croix in the center of the village, is a brotherhood where still bring together the men who organize the religious demonstrations and perpetuate the always alive traditions.

The brotherhoods preserved the traditional songs, and the latter influenced the polyphonic songs. The fellow-members always have an important role in Corsica, in particular for taken care of died and the burials, where they carry the coffin.
Spectacular processions take place in Corsica the Holy Week to commemorate Passion, the Suffering and the Death of Christ, with processions the penitent ones in hood. At the time of the processions, the brotherhoods call upon the penitent ones which represent all the human ones and carry their sins. They are hooded to mask their identity. They can wait during several years to be accepted like penitent.

The commune of Calenzana had recently undertaken the restoration of its historical center. After the Church St Blaise and its place, the frontage of the brotherhood will be given in state.

Property of the commune, the Confrerie Sainte-Croix was registered in the inventory additional of the 2/03/1981 and classified historic building in 1992.
