Photographer’s Note
On our cruise to the Pacific Islands, we stopped at this island called Lifou, a commune in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia.
We met the natives who live in little huts and live from the land. They did some traditional dancing for us and even did some weaving from coconut palm leaves. The men had their own little pub there too, and were drinking the strong kava.
I had my first taste of fresh coconut milk. It literally tasted like lemonade, really beautiful, and also had my hair braided by one of the natives.
The natural beauty of the island is amazing, so pristine and untouched. There are beautiful coconut palms and pine trees (coconut trees signify the females and pine trees signify the males) and the water around the island is just incredible.
It is just like what you see in those holiday brochures, with varying shades of blue, turquoise and aqua.
The coral reef there is so beautiful too. Lifou is the first place that I have ever snorkelled in all my life and let me say it was one of the best and beautiful experiences. Once I got the hang of using the snorkelling gear, you couldn't get me out of the water. There was so much to see, so many different corals. I couldn't get over the variety and shapes of the corals that I saw. It was truly incredible, and all sorts of colours. There were also fish to see and I even saw a little clam that was moving its "lips" for me, almost like wanting to give me a kiss :)
I will always have good memories of Lifou, of both the people and the nature.

Hi Claudia
Having had the chance to live in Noumea during some years, and thus having visited Lifou island, your note shows that thinks haven't change much since 1990...
Thank you for this reminder !
