Photographer’s Note

The sculpture is the most imortant and distinguish traditional art form in French Polinesia. The ancient sculptures had useful signification: they had religious purposes and reflected the social ang of their owner. The sculptors occupied a high level in their hierarchic society, they have the 'mana', supernatural power coming from the gods to inspire their art. The ,tikis', statues of rude stylised form, were sacred. The 'tikis', were believed to be supernatural powers and were placed to protected the temples, they incarnated the divine spirit during the religous ceremonies. The traditional 'tikis' were made of vulcanic stones.

The one in the picture is on the Sofitel Hotel garden. Taked before breakfast on my last day in paradise. On the WS a view to the Hotel pool (a nice lace to stay in Papeete)
