This is a sequel to my previous shot, where a Tahitian folklore group met the cruise ship, Seabourn Odyssey. Accompanied by the traditional ukulele music, they danced, and offered coconut goodies processed in front of us. The man broke open a coconut with a wooden club, and the woman served fresh slices. Subsequently, the man kneaded some coconut meat and made it into a pasty skin lotion seen in the photo. The young woman then went around applying the lotion to visitor's hands.
In the two complementary workshop photos, one can see the self-portrait of Paul Gauguin hanging in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and a Gauguin painting, "Where are you going", hanging in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. Except for the "coconut cups" (or "shell bras") that she is wearing to apease Western sensibilities, she could have been the subject of Gauguin's painting.

Nice close-up of this Tahitian couple. We can enjoy the details of the coconut lotion that he is making. It must have smelled and felt wonderful. I like the exotic accessories, such as the leis, the floral headdresses, and the bra made out of shells.

Hello dear Bulent
As usual, your note draws me in as much as your beautiful photo does. I love the warm tones here and of course how you show us the ceremony of these attractive people. I can certainly understand Gauguin's fascination for the people and the country. Superb skintones, colours and sharpness. The slight blur of the hands here gives us a sense of dynamism and life. Thanks for sharing this wonderful tradition with us. Did the lotion work its wonders?

Merhaba Bülent Hocam
Kuzey yarım küre donarken, güney yarım küre de sıcaklardan yanıyor olsa gerek. İlginç bir geleneksel seramoni.
Türkiye'den Selam ve sevgiler...

Hello professor Atalay,
The very first impression that I have received from viewing your photo made me recall my last visit to The Orsey museum in Paris in November 2010. The palette of your photo not only has the stunning colours of the late Gauguin’s paintings but its composition reflects the esprit of his images. Having been influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, Gauguin would not only hesitate to push the subjects right up to the extremity of the canvas, in some cases the subjects were largely cropped for compositional reasoning. The colours and the composition of your photograph capture the true impression of his paintings. How fascinating that someone of your scientific mind is equally drawn by artistic images such as Gauguin’s paintings. Broad in knowledge, and in-depth comprehension, the photograph is a true demonstration of your interests in the subject. The story of the two Swiss brothers is very fresh in my mind. Visiting your gallery is always as inspiring as the content of the site. And your stories are always a compelling testimony of your inexhaustible interests.
With my very best and warm regards,
Have a very pleasant weekend, professor
aloyho (6798) 2012-02-18 20:42
Another interesting shot and while the focus is on the mixture of the natural organic skin lotion, the flavour and atmosphere of Tahiti is beautifully portrayed. The warm tones help to emphasised the cordial reception which you must have enjoyed.I like the overall tonal control and the depth created by the inclusion of the background figures. Well done!!

Très beau tableau. Le parallèle avec Gauguin saute aux yeux. Bon cadrage.

Good Morning Bulent,
I could immediately appreciate the connection with your shot and the Gauguin painting! So many similarities!
Your main figures grab immediate interest and are both sharp and detailed. I like how their outstretched arms seem to frame the b/g figures, including them in the overall composition.
Have agood Sunday,
jhm (140054) 2012-02-19 1:52

The only contradiction I find with the title, is the fact that the "Gauguin's Subjects" were topless... but nowadays this would not be accepted...
Nice double portrait, brown colored dominanace, and a wonderful face's expression.
ChrisJ (99260) 2012-02-19 7:15
Another vision from paradise. A superb dual portrait of this charming Polynesian couple with good color saturation (in keeping with Gauguin's vision) & superb sharpness. The hibiscus flower hat the woman is wearing is unusual. Good contrasted light & well framed & composed. Tfs!
ourania (32083) 2012-02-19 8:08
so we finally got to see the man's face. He must be the protagonist of your previous picture. I like very much the way these beautiful peole are lit. Not only their placement at the foreground but also the lighting makes them stand out and glow. I like the dark background which further back becomes sunlit again and has nice depth. I also noticed the looks of the musicians crossing the picture to reach their subjects of interest and I think that's a nice detail. The colours are very vivid, just wonderful.
All the best, have a good week,
macjake (57074) 2012-02-19 11:19
sometimes its more about the story behind the photo than the photo itself.
there is a real cultural influence here, thats captured in a fine dimmed light and sharpness.
eldancer1 (28513) 2012-02-19 12:31
Very nice capture of this event, we used to do the same with the coconut while growing up the Philippines. I like your pov and good dof with nice details. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.
jlbrthnn (76037) 2012-02-19 13:33
The characters and their clothes are reminiscent of some works by Gaugin. Light and the colors are beautiful, the sharpness is not less. With the note, it's a great job. Bravo.
Have a nice day

Bonjour, cher ami Bulent,

patdeph (35748) 2012-02-21 8:45
It is the kind of image that we have in the head when we think in these islands, but I believe that now, we see only these clothes and these flowers wreaths only for the folklore and the tourism.Anyway, the picture is very beautiful, bringing the dream, as a painting of Gaughin, you are right.Magnificent!
ebingul (1926) 2012-02-21 13:42

Yes, they look like taken from Gauguin painting. I had the Russian book with the paintiongs from ermitage, I this nk I rememeber where are you going. Their skins have very strange colour. mazbe it is zour pp to make it similar to painting. i like inclusion of the girl in blue. The native people from Easter Island look similar to Polinasian. fantastic scene-

Hello Professor 'A'
Quite a show they put up there! The saturated colours keeps in line with the paintings of Gauguin. You framed his well with the activity in the BG visible through the 'frame' created by their arms. Quite an interesting colour of the hibiscus flower. Very nice picture! What was the coconut lotion for?
With Warm Regards
danyy (0) 2012-02-28 4:34
jolies couleurs pour cette scène tropicale. On sait que ces îles tiennent beaucoup à leur folklore et leurs traditions, clin d'oeil aussi sur le charme des jolies personnes de ces îles.
