Photographer’s Note

Here a photograph of the voute of the nave of the cathedral of St Pierre of Beauvais. It is currently in restoration: that explains the cross-pieces drink some to prevent the voute from breaking down. It was at the time of sound édificationla higher arrow of Christendom. “We will build a so high arrow, that once finished, those which will see it will think that we were insane. ” Work starts in April 1563 and finishes in 1569, it reaches 153m then height. On April 30, 1573 is one day black in the history of the cathedral, whereas the faithful ones leave the celebration of the Rise, the arrow and the three stages of the bell-tower break down. The rebuilding of the vaults of the transept deprives the cathedral of the funds necessary to build the nave. The cathedral remains since unfinished. Contrary to a tough legend, the cathedral is firmly anchored on a stable ground, but its very great height and the fact that it is not shouldered in the west by a nave, creates a great brittleness to him which is narrowly supervised by its various persons in charge.
