One of the more interesting things I've seen recently in Paris is the Saint-Martin Canal, by means of a cruise boat (piloted by a laid-back, long-haired fellow, as you can see).

The Canal Saint-Martin was originally ordered by Napoleon, with the twin purposes of providing a water supply and a shortcut to eliminate a stretch of the Seine with many bends in it. From about 1900 on it became a busy industrial waterway, but declined after about 1960. It escaped being filled in and has since become a canal for pleasure and tourist vessels. It descends a total of 26 metres to the point just south of Bastille, through 4 sets of double locks. Water is still drawn from the canal where it widens into the Bassin de la Villette, for public gardens, fire hydrants and fountains.

The view here was photographed heading north from Jaurès towards the area of the Parc de la Villette which has been established on each side of the canal. The boat is about to pass between the two 'magasins généraux' of the 19th arrondissement, the one on the right being the older and now refurbished, the one on the left a modernistic reconstruction of the magasin that was destroyed by fire in 1990. These magasins, built between 1845 and 1853, had served originally, I believe, as storehouses for grain and flour, but the old one is now turned over to offices and studios and suchlike. The more modern is home to a youth hostel, hotel and restaurant.

Beyond, one can see the last draw-bridge in Paris, the pont de la rue de Crimée, about to be raised for the boat, of course. Immediately behind it is a pedestrian bridge with yet another one further along. Closer shots of the Crimée bridge have been uploaded by Gildas JAN here and there.

Hi Andrew. Most impressive POV as it accentuates the yellow bars of the boat which in turn makes the foreground solid and filled with light. The darker shapes of the magasins create strong sense of depth and simultaneously a somewhat constrained feeling which is alleviated by the blue sky. Original to say the least. Regards. Klaudio.

wow this picture is moving. I have a feeling that the boat is moving towards the canal.

Nice shot and POV
regards

Petr

bonjour,
bon week end
juliette

Wonderful POV for this original composition Andrew, depht is superb as the vivid colors, really well done, compliments!!!

Nice weekend,
Fabio.

Hi Andrew,
Very interesting and nice POV .
The combination of the yellow colors , a lovely sky and nice architectural details make the composition splendid.
Best regards,
Zeynep

Bonjour Andrew,

Jean-Pierre

Hello Andrew,
The strong and vibrant lines of the boat make a great contrast with the buildings either side. The image has great depth with the canal continuing as far as the eye can see. The dark blue sky adds much to the mood. Superb colours and clarity.

Bonjour Andrdew
Nicole

A very interesting picture as a document and as a pleasurable composition which shows a fine symmetry and nice colours.
The deep blue sky adds a refreshing effect.
Well done,
Donato

Hi Andrew,

at first sight for me it looked like a video game ... strong graphism, very neat, great depth, very well done.
Thanks for sharing

Now that is a sight from Paris I have not seen before. Colourful picture and interesting note too. Good pov too (although I think it's difficult to change that much without getting wet ;-)). Have a good weekend.

Your composition works very well here Andrew, with the inclusion of the details of the boat (I thought your long-haired fellow was a girl at first!) in the foreground giving a great sense of involvement - it draws the eye into the scene.
The colours work well together, with the yellow making a good contrast with the blue sky.
Good stuff.

Cheers,
Ben

Hi, friend!
It is interesting photo from paris. I like your oryginal composition. I like your long perspective. I like your river and architecture.

Hi Andrew,
Very good POV ... it looks like a gaming screen. The converging focus created by the interesting building structures creates an illusion of depth and motion ... very dynamic effect. Well captured and composed! tfs

Hello Andrew

Andrew the sharpness and definition on this shot are excellent, as are the colours which are both vivid yet natural. The canal looks an interesting alternative to the River Seine cruise we did recently. Nice work.
cheers
Leon

Bonjour Andrew.

Jacques

Hello Andrew, not a view of Paris that one would expect; the vibrant yellow of the boat is a real eye catcher drawing the spectator in.
The perspective is excellent.I like the contrasts between the styles of the two buildings.
Lovely colours and sharpness.
Excellent notes.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Andrew - superb quality and interesting compo in the canal, with the nice inclusion of the yellow and white parts of the boat in fg of the perspective; sky is nice too... regards, Daniel

Bonjour Andrew,

Amicalement
Marc

Hello again Stephen,

I like it much also this photograph with this yellow foreground which contrasts superbly with the remainder of the image and gives a good dynamism to the composition. I appriciate the qualities of the image, in particular the good clearness. You benefitted from beautiful climatic conditions for your Parisian stay. Thank you Stephen for the interesting note.

With my friendships and with soon,

Jean-Charles

It was an excellent decision to compose your image with the front of the boat and its driver; a wonderful device to place us at the scene. The very strong perspective lines draw the eye right into the image. Well done
Kath

Hello Andrew,

A very thrilling and well chosen viewpoint! (I did change my perception when I read your notes, I thought it was a young lady!)
The strong yellow lines hold us safely in situ whilst the boat speeds foreward. I very good 3D effect.
The converging buildings draw us towards the bridge and the light relief of the sky beyond.

You do live an exciting life!
This is not quite like the outback of Australia! Which do you prefer?

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Bonjour Andrew

Hi Andrew,
good thing you told me the captain was a fellow. Thought it was a lady. :-) A wonderful composition with excellent colors, sharpness and depth. Amazing sky too! I missed this while I was in Paris recently, but I'll add it to my list for the next time.
Thanks,
Linda

Hello Andrew
This is very a refreshing image form Paris. It is a clean and crisp capture with wonderful yellows to die for and perfect tonal ranges throughout. I love the positioning you chose here with the driver leading the boat way towards the bridge. The shapes from the boat also show very good depth. The quality you presented here reminds me very much of a 5x4 trannie drum scanned with a crossfield. The quality is that good here.
Regards
Jim

Hi Andrew,
Pleasant perspective indeed! The balance of amount of yellow and blue is exquisite. I really like this clear image. Splendid!

Hi Andrew
Excellent view with fantastic sharpness. I especially like how the yellow bars and the "okay" sign stand out. I wouldn't mind going back to Paris some day. Mum took the kids last week.
Yesterday we followed yet another Ds loss on internet.

Hello Andrew:

A great shot, no doubt. A frame too balanced, almost perfect.

Good management of lighting, beautiful tones, high brightness and contrast, but more importantly, the magnificent composition you've done, offering a series of significant contrasts.

Hi Andrew, the strong colours in this image make it work for me, bright yellow moving into the brown sided canal, all overlooked by a great sky. CPL worked well for you here. Cheers, Steve

Hello Andrew,
An interesting note and a striking composition. Very attractive contrasts between the yellow boat and the blue sky, and between the squareness of the buildings and the curves of the boat and the bridge.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Andrew,
Nice perspective over the canal, you have find a good POV from that yellow boat...not a submarine? ;-))nice vivid colors,

Hi Andrew,
The yellow tour boat is beautifully complimented by the vivid blue sky in this wonderful image with fine depth, clear colors and razor sharp details. Excellent informative note.

Hi Andrew,
It looks like science-fiction ! A spaceship arriving in a city of the future ! The lines of the building are very nice and the colours are great thanks to (I think) the polarizer. A great shot !

Nice composition with good light. Colours are really amazing. Well done.

Here I have the impression that the boat is entering some artificial world, like some background of a movie.
A very nice composition

Hi Andrew

Very good use of diminishing linear perspective with the canal adding good lead in lines. A striking colour contrast, between the yellow rails of the boat, & the blue sky. Good sharpness too. Tfs!

Hello Andrew,

I like how the yellow structure stands of and contrast the surrounding architecture and blue elements!
Interesting symmetry in composition, and it seems like there is no alternative way to go...
Well framed, strong sense of depth!

It happens a while ago I lived in a flat located along the Canal Saint Martin no so far from this place. Believe or not I have never taken any Canal cruise !!!

That is really a fine take from you, deeply layered with different colors and shapes, these yellow frames make it 3-dimensional, the boat literally popping out of the monitor. What is perhaps the most impressive is how, with the help of the wide angle perspective, every shape seems fitting into teh others like a jigsaw puzzle.

Congrats for your excellent photo!
