This is a night version of my first chimera picture taken from the towers of Notre-Dame for which I received some nice comments.
The night was not as deep as I wanted but this undefined night & day may be interesting for the Chimera creature.

Let me the first of many; WOW!
('Wow' of course because of the excellent color of the sky, the burn-in of the distant lights, and of course your inspired positioning of the main subject.)
Edwin (188) 2003-07-21 4:57
I won't be the first, and probably also not the last to say... Wow!
Perfect powerful angle and a very attractive balance between the beautiful natural light of an early evening and the city lights. 6 out of 5!
Aegean (2571) 2003-07-21 5:01
Simply AMAZING!!!!You did create a shot of an imaginary world!
vbourrut (32474) 2003-07-21 5:35
Mike (693) 2003-07-21 5:43
"The night was not as deep as I wanted but this undefined night & day may be interesting for the Chimera creature"
I love it just the way it is, the gargoyle has a menacing look about it, but if you do want to alter a sky, it's quite a simple matter with Photoshop, I've done a quick workshop for you to compare.
davlee (143) 2003-07-21 6:02
I like this one even more than yesterday's, given the strong subject in the foreground. I also like Mike's workshop idea.
One thing waiting a little later would have done was bring out the colours on the busy streetcorner (pastel purples and blues, it appears) more, as well as on the monuments. But this is already a striking image as it is. Awesome!
SirWilliam (410) 2003-07-21 6:04
Great shot! Nice and evil looking Gargouille. Seems some Paris virgin won't see the next sunrise. Now buy a tripod and get a higher viewpoint ( so you get more of the city.)
CoolDan (2516) 2003-07-21 8:12
Nice shot..
dominique (11414) 2003-07-21 9:18
The other photograph is already well, but that with fallen the night is really superb, the colors are perfect, the sight is incredible.
thien (2112) 2003-07-21 11:20
The trip was worth it many times more, Steven. Simply wonderful. Of course now we would ask you to bring a staning ladder a longer tripod so you can take one from the gargoyle point of view :)
Darren (6823) 2003-07-21 11:38
This is just great Steven. Every element works very well here, the gargoyle (chimera?), the sky and the city all stand out nicely, yet blend together well at the same time. Very nice, I really have nothing constructive to add.
PiotrS (443) 2003-07-21 11:58
As all the previous comments have said, this is a superb photo. I like the semi-night light, and the composition is perfect. Of course, the next thing you need to do is to capture this scene in a thunderstorm and line up the lightning 1/3 in from the right, and have it striking the Eiffel tower....
forlife (892) 2003-07-21 14:55
WOW!tres jolie photo!Bravo!

Outstanding... This is a place I would return to often to catch the different moods that nature could provide. Really like how the gargoyle is looking over the town.

kentokyo (559) 2003-07-23 3:50

Giando (80) 2003-08-13 4:43
wow i was there 2 days ago but with day light and the effect of my picture are nothing of spectacular.. With this night color the gargoils is fantastic . Only 100 ISO ? really great shot
Schultzy (5446) 2003-08-13 10:55
jeanno (81) 2003-08-21 13:02
il manque juste...Quasimodo!!!
Bayleaf (1484) 2003-08-21 23:39
I can't add much that hasn't already been said, but congratulations on a great shot.
You worry about the night not being as deep as you'd wanted seems unfounded. This is the perfect time to have photographed this. The light is the sky makes it interesting and also illuminates areas of the city which would otherwise have been invisible if it were darker. Amazing!!
ornis (1271) 2003-08-23 11:53
It's not too late to coongratulate you for such an original shot. The sky turquoise color is stunning as well as the details down on the Seine quays. The chimera is also a very well exposed piece of art. One of my favorites.
mariogil (113) 2003-08-25 7:48
I have no words... Excellent!
The colors are amazing!
MarcusM (168) 2003-08-25 21:37

pcostas (321) 2003-09-24 16:39
How clever - how nicely this photo carries out the message... It doesn' t matter what each one gets... i' m sure it is clear for each one of us.
hmgg (66) 2003-10-01 15:43
What to say more after so many good and positive critiques??? I just love this photo! Is really beautiful! Totally expressive!!!!
The theme and framing just excelent!
iamxa (3045) 2003-10-07 7:36

Jeppe (18654) 2003-11-08 15:43
Truly a great shot - feals like Quasimodo.
I never been to Paris but I feal like now.
Surfer31 (0) 2003-11-18 19:51
What else can I say... Brilliant. Maybe there's just a little "green" in the picture, but that's not your fault. They have not made a perfect digital camera yet, I guess.
Anyway, 5 stars fot composition and exposure.
Great picture. Congratulations.
emax (919) 2003-11-20 19:15
On a pic like this I must say a word too, even if the pic says all. It's all perfect: the statue, the town and amazing sky. The Eifel's tower makes incredible balance to the statue. One of 10 best shots on TE. The pic deserves to be edited in all best magazines on the world.
mtolloczko (201) 2003-11-25 5:21
The gargoyle presiding over the most 'romantic' city on earth. An interesting angle and the lights work well below. You seem to have captured some of the most well known and essential elements of Paris. The image is sharp, I am not sure about the composition.
justrob (273) 2003-12-02 12:52
Brilliant Photograph. I love the colors, the fact that it's not over exposed and that you have the panorama of the whole city in the picture.
Well spotted, and well executed. I've added this as a favorite!
I love to see the skyline of Paris. It's so different then other cities. No skyscrapers, no tall buildings, the rooftops make a wonderful texture. I read somewhere that it was due to the massive amount of tunneling in the soft rocks below Paris - that this precludes the firm foundations necessary to build tall buildings.
This image, of any I've seen, is one of the best of Paris. Wonderful job.
appie (8) 2003-12-04 9:32
Two things drove me for a two pointer here...
First, the statue almost perfectly resembles of myself when I critique photos I totally distaste.
Second, it is a great photo indeed with superb use of DoF even in 5.2 you have it all clear!
Mrg (825) 2004-01-09 16:38
What a great great image! This photo was the first WOW of myself here in TE.Of course is on of my favourites. the blue sky next to the yellow statue.Incredible Steven
antoinep (167) 2004-01-11 4:50

maciekda (19895) 2004-01-23 0:42
just to let you know I am aware of this photo ;-)
absolute classic, I think it is the first picture that scored more than 100 points on TE. absolutely great work.
manny (21833) 2004-01-23 5:33
Let's bring it on! The best picture here in TE. This is really superb! Great colors, great composition, smart viewpoint... a perfect shot. I need one picture of this caliber to truly claim that I have a potential to be good photographer. CONGRATULATIONS!
PTAH (287) 2004-01-24 6:20
Incredible ammount of points :) , I'm glad to add my points for a record :D (even if i don't think this is the best pic on TE, I think that is just a proof of the advertisment power, as the pic is added to many themes and so on..
The pic, nothing new or what hadn't been said, great panorama and sharpness everywhere. Nice.
lost (694) 2004-02-13 8:37
Amaizing photo, with excellent compositon, good colors, excellent.

I'm going to ad my big smile too.
A pic that inspires me!!!!
Laurence (0) 2004-03-17 6:07
Riz (0) 2004-03-18 16:03
Steven wonderful shot you have here I really don't know what to say there is so many critques on this image.
Excellent all around. stunning.
cloverstar (0) 2004-03-29 12:15
I find this to be a very good crisp and clear shot of this wonderful night scene. The lighting on the statue has been captured well. Good sky colours and tones, putting very pleasing emphasis on the Eiffel Tower. This is good work.
gardenwife (103) 2004-04-05 4:36
This is great...It puts me in mind of a Frank Peretti book. Nice long exposure!
Zanni (6108) 2004-04-17 10:49
Really one of the best photo in TE up till now. How much to learn here!
longpt (947) 2004-04-30 7:51
OA! You hurt me! I think I am droped. The high sky and low town. You make clearly the sky day and the town night!
Piotr (0) 2004-05-01 4:00
Great composition, not typical photo of Paris, good work :-)
Robertsu (132) 2004-05-04 10:30
If something is great, this is!
Nice job Steven!!
eduaraujo (185) 2004-05-08 15:52
well... this is a superb photo ... a night photo that is not saturated ... i'm curious .. how can the lights not be saturated ? only choosing the right exposition ? my photo was with 0,5s and the lights become 'over-exposed' but yours is 1s and is 'perfect'...
Rangel (54) 2004-05-08 19:31
One pf the most beatiful pictures I saw around here.
Excellent sharpness in the state and exposition of the street lights.
But one curious fact is that almos all of the buildings in the second plane have their lights off. Are these commercial buildings in a sunday shot ???
pingu23 (590) 2004-05-12 10:27
I saw this FABULOUS FABULOUS FABULOUS picture a long time ago and I'm so confused: I didn't put any critique ... don't know why ;-)
I guess I have noting else to add !!

One of the best shots I have seen in this site. Seems like the devil is ready to take over Paris when the night falls. I especially like the colors in the sky and the way the face of the deamon is lit.

The sky, the city light!

rajhema (1871) 2005-10-20 12:33
The night seems perfect to reveal the structures of the building at the same time highlight the glow around street lights. Distant Tower is a masterpiece in your picture. the statue to the left is a nice decision. You picture is viewed 8027 times so far. Amazing. Good one Steve.
berseph (1758) 2005-11-08 18:22
This is probably the best picture of Paris that I have seen. I love the gargoyle in the foreground and how you captured the Eiffel tower in the back. Everything is so clear. Love the colors--especially the sky. Nice job.
timleahy (2195) 2005-11-08 19:05

Wonderful picture, precious light and great composition, it looks like the statue is looking after the city, well done!
atctim (73) 2006-01-17 19:29
The lighting is great and you certainly captured a great photo. The gargoyle is nicely lit up and frames the rest of Paris beautifully with the identifiable monuments of the Tour Eiffel and the Hôtel national des Invalides lit up predominantly in the background.
zeca (19762) 2006-02-16 6:53
Excelent picture showing a nice and so different view of this wonderful city! The POV and DOF are amazing, and so are the sharpness, colours and depth. Great work, Steven!

Magnifique!
MLINES (12516) 2006-05-28 18:09
Steven,Marvelous composition. The beast in the foreground and Icons in the distance. Well done. Murray.
jbweasle (9373) 2006-05-29 5:21
Steven, this is an incredible picture. What can I say that others haven't already? Exposure and colours are perfect. But for me it's the expression on this creatures face and the way he mockingly looks down on the whole city that really makes it for me. Great shot and worthy of all the smileys it has so far collected.
droop13400 (113) 2006-06-07 7:02

What a wonderful image from Paris. I didn't see it before. What a shame. The perspective is great. Colours so special.

A very impressive image, Steven. There's not much I can add to all that has been said above, the number of people who have added this to their favourites being evidence of the quality of this. The composition, DOF and sharpness are all superb. Cheers . . . David

I like the Sharp focus...
Again, a great shot.
danarm (157) 2006-10-11 19:13
I have been to this very spot and it was well worth the climb. However, my photo pales in comparision to this! The colors in the sky contrast so nicely with the warm lights on the gargoyle, and the clarity of the city below is brilliant. Well done!!!!
zumoduvas (2069) 2006-10-22 18:55
Excellent picture, very good details an colors.

Wow, excellent phot! I have been to Paris and have visited all the tourist spots, but never imagined one could capture such a nice view of Paris from Notre-Dame.
Greg1949 (9011) 2007-09-25 17:30
Steven, this is an awesome shot, it is of course masterfully executed but the composition is exceptional and not at all post card like, the detail is so crisp and the colors are so warm, great capture.
jean11-3 (2799) 2007-10-05 4:03
A perfect shot Steven,as is proved by the many, many glowing comments.
The lighting, colours and clarity are wonderful.
The sky is a beautiful colour which complements the ochre coloured stone of the gargoyle.
Truja (4953) 2007-10-29 4:13
Superba imagen. Felicidades

Great shot! I think this is the perfect time of the day to get a good photo. Less light and you don't get that level of detail in the city. I think the balance is great between the light in the creature, the city, the city lights and the sky...! One of the little improvement could be the bridge in the bottom of the photo... it could appear a little more along with the river...! But that's a little little little detail that doesn't matter!
This photo is Fantastic!!! Congratulations

diverjohn (544) 2009-06-29 18:23
Lovely capture here. The exposure is spot on.
My only thought is, would you try using a tripod and longer exposure that would alter the background.
gedul56 (158) 2009-08-13 4:03
Wonderful capture. At least I have missed a beautiful place in Paris. Thanks that you let join this amazing picture.

this is an amazing image.
Mask / chimera / devil/does not look kindly on the night city.
For me,it's a lot of allegory in this picture.
An interesting capture of the night streets of Paris near the Seine, after a dark belt, and only the lights of the Eiffel Tower.
Best regards and greeting from Poland Tomas

Chapeau
iamysl (63) 2010-05-14 8:13
Very impressive picture!
Composition of colour, and lighting create a harmony atmosphere.
The dramatic POV somehow looks like a movie poster.
