Not much more I can say about the Louvre that hasn't already been said. It's the world's greatest collection of art, and a must see. The new visitor centre and entrance makes quite a stark contrast with the traditional facade of the former palace, which caught my eye. After seeing the Da Vinci Code I half expected to see a car chase erupt....
This was taken early in the morning, with nobody around, a rare occurance there. It was also shot on film (Velvia 100), with a 17mm lens which is difficult to use without distortions.

You are right that´s art !!! Parabéns!
Very good contrast and ilumination !!
I actually would have prefered it without croping one chimne and without the photograph in the water :-)

Hi, Alvin! What to say about such a nice pic? Great! Original POV, nice colours and stunning reflections! Thanks for sharing! Greetings from Rio! Miguel.
andante (7092) 2006-06-28 21:56
Alvin, was this on a tuesday morning? away from the tourists? on a day full of DaVinci code expectations? It is an awesome capture, the reflection of the morning light on the pool creates a mood different to the one the normal tourist experiences. Very sharp details and great composition.
alana (2625) 2006-06-28 22:03
Your poin of view is really amazing, this reflection is indeed a piece of art, excellent sharpness, architecture details and deep colors. Very well composed and seen. Bravo
benkrut (2407) 2006-06-28 22:06
I like very much the reflections and the way you framed the picture.
The colours are perfectly saturated, almost reaching the top border of my tolerance :)
Is it your shadow down there? Taking such a nice picture you should think of avoiding it somehow.
danielswalsh (13599) 2006-06-28 22:11
This shot looks really familiar as I watche Da Vinci Code a couple weeks ago.
In being honest, I do have a couple points to make; the image does suffer from a bit of 'keystoning' (where buildings appear to be leaning in towards the centre). This is visible as the horizon (behind the visitor centre is tilted down to the left- but if you were to correct it- the building on left would look to be leaning to the right like the Tower of Piza! I'd be interested to see what could be done in Photoshop CS2 with it... and the other suggestion is to try and include the tops of buildings.
Other then that; the exposure and levels are great, the composition is superb, and I really like the reflections.

Alvin, you have done a great work here!
Pretty colors, sharp, POV, everthing is perfect!
kmarscher (2887) 2006-06-28 22:54
Interesting angle and POV. I agree with Daniel that the top of the building would add to the shot. Excellent colors and resolution.
Of course, the da Vinci code brings your photo to the fore, but this is one of the best posts.

nice capture. i love the reflections. excellent color, perfect exposure.
clickrick (385) 2006-06-28 23:16
Finally a shot where the new structure actually looks good ! Great compo. The positioning of the two buildings is really good, creating a comfortable tension between them while preserving a sense of belonging. Very nice

great shot. The reflection is fantastic. The light and colours are very nice. You have been a bite of luck to take this shot without people, anb this make this shot perfect. Well done.
Thanks for share.
pasternak (15185) 2006-06-29 4:49
A very familiar and much photographed subject, but you have an amazing POV and composition here, let alone the reflections... It´s a pity one of the chimneys is cut off, but it´s minor here. The perspective of the Louvre is nicely balanced by the pyramide, creating a triangle in the blue sky, and because the pyramid triangle is also there, this creates a play of shapes.
Haymotion (2759) 2006-06-29 4:59
Tout y est... effet mirroir, belle luminosité, contraste d'époque entre le vieux bâtiment et la pyrammide en verre... et j'en passe
teutza (10590) 2006-06-29 5:02
excelent picture!the arhitecture is double great because of it's reflecion in the water!
alekpet (4663) 2006-06-29 6:43
Amasing morning colours deliver the beauty of the louvre. What I don't like so much is that you cut off the main building on the left, which you could have avoided by taken the camera more up which wouldn't destroy the reflection much.
take care, Aleks
hugolef (4913) 2006-06-29 7:02
a great shot ... i like this reflection and that wonderfull contrast between the "yellow Louvre" and that blue sky ... the way you framed shows another contrast between Louvre and the Pyramide (old and modern) ...
A nice POV and a nice shots ... a nice idea of using your F90 and Fuji Velvia ... you get so nice colors
ChrisJ (117197) 2006-06-29 7:32
Wonderful color, sharpness, & pov, in this outstanding landscape. Good color contrast & reflections. Tfs!
quetzal (3467) 2006-06-29 8:33
Splendid reflection in Paris. Excellent composition with a good use of lighting. We can see on the bottom a shadow. It is yours ?
Very good work.
nwoehnl (122) 2006-06-29 8:38
Beautiful photo, Alvin, and a fine use of the wide-angle to fit a lot of detail into this pleasant reflective composition of the contrasting architecture elements at the Louvre. Beautiful tonality brought forward by the morning light. A bit of a pity that the top of the old building is cut, that's where 14 or 15 mm would've come in handy :o) Well done.
john_c (24666) 2006-06-29 10:40
Superb lighting and well balanced, with the modernistic structure on the right nicely situated alongside the ancient. I like the great reflections here and the crisp clear look. I am surprised you shot this with Velvia, as I didn't realize you still carried your film camera. A real coup capturing this without people....Well done.
Fis2 (103832) 2006-06-29 11:46
I like the your composition. Wonderful reflection. Super colours and contrast. Very impressive picture. Good work.
Greetings from Poland

Very impressive point of view and colors ! The reflections are welcome and everything works well together...
Two milimeters are missing on the top of the Louvres...;-)
Ann75 (0) 2006-06-29 14:04
What a shot, Alvin! I love the lighting in this photo as well as the deep colours. The view over the Louvre is amazing with so many fine details. The reflection in the water is outstanding and the POV is great. Excellent work, Alvin!
wilkinsonsg (8662) 2006-06-29 16:05
I like the pov (shame about the chimmney though) and the well saturated colours - TFS :)
PixelTerror (0) 2006-06-30 4:07
I like here the fine morning light and the clarity of the reflection which the Velvia helped to pull out nicely, I like too the angle that puts the two architectural styles side by side, It's just pity you did not frame a little bit wider and cut the chimney. How do you find these Velvia 100 compared with the discontinued Velvia 50 ?
Have a nice day,

LCannon (2796) 2006-06-30 23:16
I love the contrasts here, the glowing Louve, the see through dark pyramid, the reflections on the pool. I agree I can almost see the police chase from here! I like how the new structure looks almost as tall as the museum itself here. Well captured.
jbweasle (9395) 2006-07-01 4:09
Hello Alvin, the quality of the light you have captured here is incredible. It gives naturally rich and well saturated colours. The composition is excellent too showing us the mix of modern and traditional architecture. And of course that reflection is superb.
veronika (6058) 2006-07-01 4:19
wow i have never seen the Louvre and it´s surroundings in this angle and way! Nice and original, the reflextion is perfect :)

perfect reflection! Nice POV and colors also.
TeresaT (10806) 2006-07-01 18:37
Very beautiful this composition.
I like the contrast between these 2 different architectonic styles.
The reflections on the water are just amazing.
Beautiful light and saturated colours.
starbug (6924) 2006-07-02 5:07
hi Alvin, there's such a huge architectural gap between these two structures, but here they come together so well, because what we concentrate here on are the fantastic colours and this great mirror reflection. plus, i suppose this contrast is what can be considered as an attraction in itself. great shot.
KevRyan (22956) 2006-07-02 7:34
I like your point of view here and the reflections Cormac and am not in the slightest disturbed by any distortion - I like the view of the world wider lenses give - such wonderful lighting - your shadow on the water is subtle enough to work Ok at this size but might have a different sort of impact on a larger print - the complexities to the eye of these two buildings of such different design and eras is interesting - the pyramid takes on a decorative aspect in detail as well as through its overall impact. Nice work
best wishes Kev
fib2004 (1182) 2006-07-02 14:00
Great shot, you could sell it as a postcard. Perfect reflections and great contrast between the pyramid and museum. My only critique would be the fact that you are also reflected in the water.
ArtLook (2348) 2006-07-02 23:55
Interesting composition with contrast of modern and old architecture. Perfect reflections on the water - so clear, as like at an mirrow... Very good shot, Bravo!
With BEST Regards,
danyy (0) 2006-07-03 2:42
Rossignol (2289) 2006-07-03 17:36
Inspired shot, Alvin.
The clarity of light and superb mirror-like reflections give an exciting slant to what must be one of Paris's most photographed landmarks. The stark contrast between the honeyed tones of the old building and the very contemporary glass and steel pyramid, separated by the reflections of both, works brilliantly.
capthaddock (28790) 2006-07-03 18:05
Hi Alvin what a divine light, and the perfectly still surface gave an unforgettable perfect mirror reflection, I can't believe this is a scan, the image quality is so perfect
fabio_ts (13696) 2006-07-04 3:55
A perfect reflection Alvin, ..I envy you for this.. :o)
when I was here I found 4 days of bad weather.. :o(
great picture, with perfect light and high impact colors.. compliments!!
have a nice day,
erdna (5711) 2006-07-04 12:30
Very beautiful and very artistic shot of this museum. The contrast between the classic structure and the modern one is superb tied together by their own reflections. Very well done.
Thank you for your visit and comments on

Absolutely stunning shot of Louvre and the pyramid - and their reflections, Alvin.
The exposure is top noch as well as composition and light.
Excellent colours - am not surprised at all that this one got so many visits (and points)!

peter1892 (1681) 2006-07-08 17:57
Wow, this is excellent. The viewpoint & the early morning light are superb, the colours are incredible. It's almost impossible to find a new or unique thing to say about this shot, I'll just say that it's a fantastic image, well done!
nivas37 (662) 2006-07-17 16:17
I see that most of your work revolves around reflections, and they are simply wonderful to see.
This image is no exception. You could not have asked for a much clear, much crisp or more still waters than the one captured here.
Rgds / Nivas
Stepan (27210) 2006-07-28 16:19
I regret your shadow in the foreground but the symmetry is really perfect and beautiful. The water is so still, that it looks like a mirror. An impresive reflection compo where you played well with the lines of the water tanks.
ydarias (679) 2006-08-01 10:43
Hello Alvin. What can I say? The photo is superb. The utilization of the water in the photo is perfect, because the reflections and the luminosity is better. I suppouse than you used a polarizer in this shoot, but the colors are very good. Good job.
sebinho342 (19317) 2006-08-19 8:44
Hi Alvin, you have amazing pictures, this one is fabulous but what a hard decision to select one above all in your last page posted ... All my congratulations, yes you are a master of the art of reflexion !
Bien (4745) 2006-09-08 8:51
Hi Alvin, Have been missing an awful lot of excellent shot during my absence and it was hard to choice from which one I should start commenting. This one is absolutely fabulous. You have managed to shoot an original shot from an often photographed place. You should send it to them to use in their folder, it's better than any other they will ever get! Perfect beautiful reflection, sublime composition and splendid colours. Sabine

Great shot,well done.
marknunnerley (2780) 2006-10-25 13:12
Fantastic shot Alvin. Is it me or is that shadow in the water of you. It,s the only thing that lets it down.
That sounds a bit strong. I mean the only thing that stops it being perfect. That sounds better. Make a note, must get better at critiqing!!!
Well done though.
smash2707 (3320) 2006-12-27 17:11
Hi Alvin. Good composition including modern and traditional and a nice perspective. Beautiful reflections and excellent sharpness. I might have taken one step back to include the chimney, but that's a minor detail. The color of the sky is amazing. Regards, Yvonne

Paris without people around is nicer . you're right , it's exceptional to be alone there but getting up a little early is not a big price to pay to be so quiet .
great version of the Louvre and his Pyramid
