A perspective over the upper end of the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris.
The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4.5 kilometre long canal in Paris. It connects the Canal de l'Ourcq to the river Seine and runs underground between Bastille (Paris Métro) and République (Paris Métro).
Construction of the canal was ordered by Napoleon I in 1802, in order to create an artificial waterway for supplying Paris with fresh water to support a growing population and to help avoid diseases such as dysentery and cholera.
Gaspard de Chabrol, prefect of Paris, proposed building a canal from the Ourcq River (starting 100 kilometres north-east of Paris). The canal was dug from 1802 to 1825, funded by a new tax on wine. The canal was also used to supply Paris with food (grain), building materials, and other goods, carried on canal boats. Two ports were created in Paris on the canal to unload the boats: the Port de l'Arsenal and the Bassin de la Villette.
By the 1960s, traffic had dwindled to a trickle and the canal narrowly escaped being filled in and paved over for a highway. Today, the canal is covered for a portion of its life: from Rue du Faubourg du Temple to the Place de la Bastille. It is now used mainly by pleasure craft.

How ironic, a tax on wine to supply the city with water!
This is a lovely, bright day, which has enabled you to capture excellent reflections in the canal, given an animated introduction by the ducks!
The iridescent green is an unusual colour to see on a bridge and makes a strong impact, here. The repetition of the colour carries movement right through the shot.
Have a great day,

another fascinating view of this canal and scenery around it. I imagine it quite pleasant to walk along the shore and cross over these briges. Certainly looks nice and peaceful. Good composition

The cerulean blue, the reflection of the sky in the canal, becomes the focal point of this fine photo, but it is the engaging note that is just as interesting for me. You must have been standing on an adjacent bridge to capture this lovely scene.

When you think hpw close this came to being filled in, wow. THen again, the Eiffel tower came close to destruction too, so we can be thankful for many things that still exist! An interesting show on the canal, and a really excellent note too. I am not sure how I feel about this green bridge, its a bit odd looking, but its a good focal point on the canal. Thanks as always

The light has given some gorgeous reflections. The green bridge makes a very good focal point and I like the other splashes of green in the picture. A lovely image.

Good evening Stephen,
A view through a bridge yet to see another one down the canal view.
Sky reflected where the ducks afloat, with the bridge created a nice ellipse mirror on.
DOF and sharp details superbly collected.
Have a nice holiday weekend,

I'm absolutely revelling in that magical golden light. The sparse trees, powdery blues and glassy reflections run a close second. Followed closely again by the impressive perspective. We dont often see water shots from your gallery, so this series is one to savour. Happy Easter too!
