The "petites écoles of the solitaires"
The solitaires were not monks but rather laymen who chose to withdrax from society and live near the monastery in an atmosphere of simplicity, intellectual and manual laboour, teaching and prayer. In around 1651, they extended the farm buildings at Port-Royal to accommodate the famous Petites Ecoles (Small Schools) where, for serveral decades, thes dispensed a remarkably modern education to their young pupils (scholl books in French, study of foreing languages, abolition of corporal punischment, etc.
