Photographer’s Note

The "Gros-Horloge" is one of the symbolic monuments of the city of Rouen. The construction, attached to a belfry, is constituted by an Renaissance's arc stepping over the street of Gros-Horloge surmounted by an astronomical clock of the XIVth century. The clock set in the arc is one of the most ancien of France: the movement was made in 1389. The clock was installed itself during the same year. The clock represents a gold-coloured sun of 24 shelves on a studed blue bottom; the dial is 2,50 metres in diameter. On the double screen, the only needle points the hour, at the end of which is represented a lamb. He also appears a "week-to-a-page diary" and moon phases are indicated in the superior oculus by a sphere 30 cms in diameter. The week-to-a-page diary is decorated with allegorical subjects: the Moon for Monday, Mars for Tuesday, Mercury for Wednesday, Jupiter for Thursday, Venus for Friday, Saturn for Saturday and Apollon for Sunday. The Easter lamb, represented in the center of the arch, symbolizes the weapons of the city.
