Photographer’s Note

Le Havre is a Port in Normandy, in the North-West of France. As a big port, the city was strongly destroyed during World War II. The city was re-built just after the war in the by Auguste Perret (a french famous architect). He had to do quickly and cheap.

He designed a "modern" new town, with straight avenues, designed with 6,24 square modules and based on the use of concrete, for one of the first time in Europe, at that scale.

The city is one of the most important urban and architectural "creation" for the XXth century in Europe. And this is a fascinating and amazing place ! That's the reason why the city joined the World Heritage in July.

On this 1st picture, you can see the City Hall, built by Perret himself. A typical view from... Le Havre.

Bonjour Stephane,
ce n'est pas souvent qu'on est voisins dans la gallerie alors je saute sur ton image....
Cadrage classique ou tu utilises bien les deux jets d'eau en bas pour ouvrir.
La place et la ligne du batiment avec sa tour son bien saisies, tout est absolument "au carré", pas un cheveux qui dépasse.

une page de 'histoire que je ne connaissais pas, merci de me la faire découvrir.
VIte , bien et bon amrché, le challenge était de taille et il a été mené à bien.
Ici, j'apprécie l'esthétique de l'ensemble, d'autant qu'il semble bien entretenu.

Une photo parfaite sur le plan technique avec de superbes couleurs , surtout le ciel.
POV et cadrage parfait.
Sans oublier la note complète.

J'aime beaucoup dans ton cliché la rigueur des lignes du bâtiment et du parterre mis en valeur par une composition assez "stricte". Magnifique ciel. Bonne idée de "meubler" l'avant-plan avec les jets d'eau. Note intéressante !

Your note is very interesting. I did not know that so modern things (about 60 years old) could join the World Heritage, but I am sure this city is worth of it.
Good PoV to show us the big empty square in front and the building behind without distortions. Well satured colours in the sky and the buildings.

j'aime bien ta photo qui est tout à fait classique et sans surprise, elle illustre bien ta note.
Bon éclairage et beau ciel normand !
Il y a quelques choses d'amusant dans ce classement au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco. Je travaillais au Havre alors qu'un film se tournait en ville. Le soir,après mon boulot,je me hâtais de retrouver le lieux de tournage car Christophe Lambert intérprétait le rôle du curé de Solidarnosc, Populiesko, et le centre ville, du moins dans les alentours du tournage, était transformé en ville polonaise avec tout ce que les décorateurs estimaient d'assez glauque et réaliste d'une ville polonaise sous le communisme... la gazette locale, Paris-Normandie, presque journal d'opposition à la commune du Havre qui était alors administrée par un conseil municipal de gauche, communistes et socialistes. Le maire était un communiste de longue date. Rien n'était trop affreux pour ce journal de comparer la fiction du film et la réalité havraise qui était, selon les articles de choc, identique au régime soviético-polonais. Il ne faisait pas dans la dentelle.
Aujourd'hui, la ville est administrée par une municipalité de droite : les immeubles grisâtres n'ont pas changé, les rues piétonnes n'ont plus, l'église et son quartier, centre du film, sont toujours identiques... mais Paris Normandie maintenant n'y vois que des belles choses....

Mis à part ça, le centre ville reconstruit est tout de même impressionnant, on met un certain temps à y trouver du charme...Mais dans l'ensemble c'est plus intéressant que Brest ou Lorient..

ma critique est un peu longuette, j'en conviens !

Salut Stéphane

La photo d’architecture te réussit très bien.
J’aime la lumière qui donne un aspect austère à ce bâtiment et fait bien ressortir les détails.
Ton cadrage est très bon, car avec ce bâtiment la photo me parait très équilibrée.
J’aime bien la présence du piéton avec le sac rouge.
Peut être un truc qui me dérange, j’aurais bien voulu voir les jets d’eau du premier plan sans être coupés.

On a beau dire, c'est moins romantique que le Vietnam.
Par contre l'image ets très belle pour sa luminosité exceptionnelle.

I love the graphic lines of this building and the strong light you had here is doing a good job of putting the shade in just the right places to enhance the lines. I also like the symmetry of the little fountains.

Bon soir Stephane, I didn't know that Le Harvre was rebuild this way, I have to visit it consifdering the paralels with my town Rotterdam. The architecture, which is deliciously captuted here in richly saturated tones and much crispness under a marvellous sky, is typical for the postwar 'rebuilding in concrete epoque'. It looks like some railwaystations in Holland. Very nice work!

Hi Stephane,
A bold, colourful composition. You have made this square and set of buildings come alive, as the rich brown tiles contrast well with the sky, and yet the colours do not appear over saturated. The tall building on the left balances and anchors the shot, and the colourful flag is visible and enhancing. A clear, crisp shot. Very well done, Stephane. You have done justice to the scene.

tu as boosté un peu les couleurs, mais celà donne une belle image
le cadrage est tiré au cordeau comme Perret l'avait fait

The grid of the city lines is captured well just in this scene of this square. Everything here has a good play on a basic grid. It also makes for good perspective across the square sort of in the tradition of the ideal Renaissance city but this time in the ideal modern city. You've placed yourself nicely along the whole facade and tower to enhance that deep feel. And that sky is beautiful as a backdrop to this. Harsh concrete and a soft blue sky.

This is a sharp, nicely saturated view of Le Havre's City Hall. You've captured it on a bright day, whiich serves to maximize the color of the concrete used throughout the building and the surrounding area. This also taught me about the place of Le Havre in world heritage. Thank you for that and for the helpful link to the UNESCO World Heritage site.
