Photographer's Note

I have discovered yesterday the magnificent Prieuré Saint-Gabriel, located between Caen and Bayeux.
A true haven of peace, which I will present on the coming days.

To respect the tradition of Sunday, I begin with the church of which he remains today the choir and its semi-circular apse.
Its history began in the 10th century, during the Viking invasions that rocked Normandy. Destructions are large. The Church disorganized.
At the request of the Dukes of Normandy, the monks of the Abbey of Fecamp are responsible for the Christian reconquest of the region and especially in the diocese of Bayeux. With the support of the Duke William the Conqueror, they implement many monasteries.
The founding of Saint-Gabriel in 1058 took place in this movement.
Towards the middle of the twelfth century, the great church was built thanks to donations from rich families wanting to win the favor of the Church and the Duke.
In 1749, threatening to fall into ruin, the nave was demolished.
Only in the mid-nineteenth century, a norman archaeologist, Arcisse de Caumont, will inscribe the chapel on the list of Historic Monuments.
