Don't drink and shoot Photo

Photographer’s Note

Just after a copious meal washed down with two beers and red wine, Didier, Henk and me were heading for a blue hour shot.

I was feeling kind of "whoopee!", as I rarely drink more than two glasses of red wine... So while we (they) were discussing about the best location to adopt, I was playing with my tripod until the locking clamp got stock between my left eyeball and socket...

But instead of following my friends, I've decided to trespass a closed construction site, in order to get on the other side of the channel (it was the only possible access, unless one would be ready to swim with 20 kilos of photographic equipment on his back, which was my second option, due to my state-of-mind...).

Once on the other side, half-blind and half conscious, I've walked through the wet field and mushy soil until I was soak up to the knees, desperately seeking a good angle. I could hear Henk and Didier screaming at me to joined them on the other side, but the little monkeys in my head were screaming louder...

Finally, I came back on the dam they were builiding and manage to get this shot in the can before the sky became too dark. The real exposure time is 55 seconds, but TE system doesn't allows more than 30 seconds, like if Bulb mode wasn't existing.

hello André,
loved the note, especially the "whoopee!" feeling part, sounds familiar :D and love the photo too, the golden reflections in the milky water are pure magic with the gentle curve nicely leading the eye towards the castle. the fog adds to the dreamy mood of the shot, simply beautiful.

hello André, alors pas couché au Canada, et nous non plus... une très belle vue de cet endroit si primé des touristes,les couleurs sont plus froides que sur la photo de Henk,et le reflet moins visible, intéressant différents résultats à la même heure au même endroit

Oh man, your guys where absolutely blessed by the photography gods and I'm sure that what you wrote to Henk in his shot is probably very true. You guys got absolutely stunning shots at the perfect light and will be there forever not only as flawless photographic beauties but also for a great friendship build on magnificent light.
There is no way that you can compare each of these shots that you guys got. They are sublime and each of these speak a different accent of the same language.

Beautiful photo, André! The colours are great, specially reflected on the waters, adding depth even in the dark. Well taken! I heard a lot of time ago that we must drink something to keep our hands stable, so your red wine works very well... ;-D

This is a stunning picture. But, it is the water in the foreground that makes me feel absolutely satisfied. It is perfectly placed in the frame and has a beautiful reflection. Well done. It was really worth all your effort.

Prise de risque maximale (tu sais qu'il y a des sables mouvants là-bas) mais pour quel résultat! Somptueux! (et encore, je crois que la compression du site fait perdre des détails).Je crois qu'à vous trois vous allez nous faire un livre de photos exceptionnel sur le Mont Saint Michel.

Beautiful poetic imagery, like a modern fairy tale! My daughter was there just recently and described the site quite well. Obviously the buzz you had on didn't hamper your ability to capture a striking moment.

Hi Andre,
The snaking waterway in the foreground brings us into the shot towards this beautiful building, and the golden tones which are all matching on the water, sky and lights on the building are beautiful and create a nice unified image. It's amazing how different people photographing the same location come out with different results, and you can see the styles of each one. I am surprised you did not fall into the water ;o)

Eh bien voilà ce dont je parlais dans le message que je t'ai laissé sur mon post.
Une image fabuleuse prise au moment le plus opportun. Les couleurs du ciel et de l'éclairage du mont s'allie parfaitement pour créer une unité splendide.
En voyant cette image on ne se doute pas de l'aventure dans laquelle tu t'es embarqué pour obtenir cette image. ;-)

En tout cas, merci au vin rouge qui t'a permis de franchir cette barrière pour nous offrir encore une fois, une vue splendide sur le Mont illuminé. L'atmosphère est toute particulière grâce aux beaux reflets dorés.

Je vois là encore que le métier de photographe n'est pas de tout repos...
Jolie note. On imagine bien le parcours du combattant, le sang qui jaillit de l'oeil, l'accent qui traîne ( à cause de l'alcool), la boue sur les chaussures... Et les lascars qui hurlent pour te faire revenir sur la berge.

L'alcool fait faire des choses dangeureuses... Je ne pas certaine que ça aide à faire des photos... parce que je suppose que dans ta galerie, peu sont faites sous son emprise... mais celle-ci... comme celle d'avant mais j'irais tout à l'heure... celle-ci donc est impressionnante... le mont d'or? non la cîtée d'or.

On dit qu'au pied d'un arc-en-ciel on trouve un pot d'or, ici pas la peine d'attrendre la combinaison de la pluie et du soleil, c'est du régal à tous les étages.

Le reflet, le lit de la mer qui serpente, la brume qui fait comme un tapis cotonneux... Je ne sais pas qui du ciel ou du Mont donne ses couleurs à l'autre, mais le mélange est magnifique.

Alors maintenant je mesure l'ampleur de mon erreur. Refuser? non ne pas accepter un shoot nocturne avec toi me suivra donc toute ma vie.
Deux solutions s'offrent à moi.

1/ J'oubie ta galerie, et jusqu'à ton nom, je change de crèmerie comme ça je ne soupirerai plus le coeur serré...

2/Je m'achète un stock de mouchoir, et je pleure, à chaque fois que je viendrais voir tes photos... là aussi en soupirant puisque sinon c'est pas crédible.

On fait des conneries des fois.. maintenant faut assumer... mais c'est difficile, très difficile

Une 3ème solution, j'peux me pendre tout de suite avec la lanière du 450.

edit 2 :
Je peux me fracasser le crâne avec l'appareil... plus d'appareil, plus de cerveau, je me marre le reste de ma vie.

edit 3 :
Je démonte une à une toutes les pièces et je les mange. Comme ça je meurs dans d'attroces souffrances en ne perdant pas de vue le pourquoi du comment ça a commencé.

Hi Andre,
if you add Mont-Saint-Michel and Blue Hour it is probable that the result comes out fantastic. In this case the choice to take the picture from the other side of the channel adds to your picture a great feature also in terms of composition. Amazing! Dario.

PS It is difficult to judge from a small TE-800 pixel-version, but why did you adopt a so closed aperture f/20? For sure you lost a bit in sharpness due to diffraction. Isn't it?

La couleur de l'éclairage du Mont qui se marrie bien avec les couleurs du ciel.

La ligne de brume ( ? ) est également agréable à l'oeil.

Wonderful to see the depth here with those two levels of mist in the distance. Very nice gradual tones in the sky. Wonderful.
I might have sharpened the lighter parts in the mountain a bit towards darker, but it's nice as it is as well. Great result, especially when considering the state you were in! :-))))

Salut Henk... euh non pardon André!

Alors là, je dis HALTE.
La bande des 1DS III ne va pas se mettre tous les matins à nous narguer avec des images de cet acabit...

Le point positif, c'est que au même endroit et avec un matériel similaire, vous arrivez à nous sortir des images complétement différentes.

Superbe image, bien sûr, cette courbe au premier plan (que tu es allé chercher au péril de ta vie) en du plus bel effet et permet de rentrer dans l'image parfaitement.

En prime tu y ajoute une note où je suis encore tordu de rire, et j'imagine la scène du bucheron errant la tête en sang dans les champs et les marécages la nuit avec les 2 compères hurlant derrière la barrière pour tenter de le ramener à la raison?

Mon conseil pour terminer, simplement le rappel de la devise que nous pouvons arborer fièrement: "Save Milk, Drink Beer!", donc en 2 mots, continue à picoler car ca nous offre des images extraordinaires ;-)

Hi hi hi les petits singes le soir meme et le lendemain les lapins duracell, voila des conditions top pour faire de la photo, je dirais que tu as ete vistime d'un traquenard belgo-hollandais, ils savent tenir ces lascards la !
La compo de cette image est nickel par contre je suis plus reserve sur la temperature des couleurs, c'est la premiere chose qui m'a saute a l'oeil (j'ai pas de trepied sous la main, la) en decouvrant ton image, pourquoi une TC aussi chaude ???
Bon ben bon retablissement alors, tu peux boire un tonneau de Molson, ca ca te fera pas de mal ;-)

Fantastic composition and POV here. You managed to capture the blur hour perfectly. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF. The layer of fog on the ground helps set the mood for this wonderful shot. The S curve of the waterway leading the eye to the main subject is great with the reflection of color being a plus. All of you problems were rewarded with a fine photo. This is probably the best photo of Mont St. Michel I have seen.

When i posted this morning at 5am i shut down the pc and went to work. Now coming home we are standing beside each other...wonderful ;-)
I had a great time with you, making great pictures and had great fun. Now standing beside each other gives it an extra feeling...great..!!!
I told you how important the curve in front was, it makes the composition while mine is complete different. Somewhere there on the right in the middle on the land Didier and i standing there but can't be seen here. You caught the fog very well, at mine only good to see at large size, i like this here. The yellow is another good choice, mine is pushed more to the redwhich makes it two complete different images.

tes photos et celles de Hank rivalisentde beauté ,pour notre plus grand plaisir!Le Mont manque peut-être légèrement de netteté,mais le reste est si beau qu'on y prête pas vraiment attention!J'adore la courbe de l'eau au premier plan et le superbe reflet doré qu'on peut y voir!Je crois que c'est cette partie qui amplifie la magie du lieu ainsi que le ciel doré!Quand on lit dans quel piteux état tu étais,on ne peut qu'être encore plus admiratif quant au résultat!Félicitations,c'est splendide!

Thanks for the comments on my own MSM shot!
I just had to come and look at your shots again, and found this one from the other day! Superb shot, as good as Henk's or even better, which I just saw. I chose this one because of the lovely curve of the water and the layer of mist. The long exposure brings out the details nicely and the faint lights on the far shore of Normandy in the background. The water looks luminous with the reflected light. Very well done, and thanks for the entertaining note.

Dis-donc André, faudrait arrêter de nous présenter des photos comme celles-ci, sinon je vais devoir vous laisser... Même après avoir enfilé des bières, vous nous pondez de ces merveilles...
Juste avant j'ai critiqué celle de Henk en lui disant que c'était la plus belle que j'avais vu de ce site, mais je pense que vous vous tenez au niveau de la qualité.
Et concernant le matos, vous avez tous des 1Ds, ou vous vous l'êtes passé entre vous?

Il faut parfois prendre des risques pour faire des photos mais quand même..Tu n'avais pas oublié ton pied ,c'est déjà ça :o)
Il n'est pas donné à tout le monde de voir le Mont sous de telles couleurs et une ambiance pareille mais la magie fait que nous pouvons en profiter aussi et cela eut été dommage de ne pas pouvoir partager cette image de rêve.Le mont semble flotter au dessus la brume ,miracle? mais n'est ce pas le lieu pour?
Tout ça pour dire que je suis en admiration devant ta photo

Bonjour André,

Ah oui, t'as décidé d'y aller crescendo ! Magnifique image, encore plus belle que la précédente. Réussir une telle photo dans les conditions décrites dans ta note relève du génie.

Ce bras de mer aux formes ondulantes qui reflète les lumières de l'abbaye donne de la magie et de la sensualité à ta composition. Les couleurs sont comme de l'or transformant ton image en petit bijou.

Il y a juste un manque de piqué au niveau des habitations du MsM soit dû au redimensionnement pour TE ou à une légère vibration pendant la pose de 55 secondes. Faut dire que ton trépied venait de prendre un sacré coup sur la gu... lui aussi et en vibrait peut-être encore.

Ainsi c'était donc ça l'origine de ton oeil rouge façon lapin albinos quand on s'est rencontré devant le bar du resto crocodile. Et dire que j'ai cru que je t'avais tapé dans l'oeil at the first sight ;-)

C est un vrai plaisir de decouvrir les photos de votre virée au Mt St Michel. Ca me donne envi de retourner faire un tour vers cet endroit si particulier.
Ici ce qui me plait, c est bien evidemment le jeu de couleurs dorées entre le ciel, l eclairage du Mt et son reflet dans le ru. En plus, on ne voit pas cette saloperie de parking qui bousille le decor.
Allez, c est decide, j y retourne a mon prochain retour en Bretagne.

Bonsoir, André. C'est pas très sérieux tout ça. Boire quand on se promène avec un petit Ixus, passe encore, mais quand on balade un Mark III, cela frise l'inconscience. Bon, malgré tout, le résultat estplus qu'honorable, même s'il me semble qu'il y a un peu plus de rouge dans la photo de Henk. Je parle de la couleur ici, bien sûr. Ta composition est très intéressante avec le chenal doré qui nous emmène bien vers le sujet principal. Les couleurs sont très belles ainsi que les reflets, tout cela crée une ambiance très agréable dans l'image.

This reminds me of Henk's shot then I realize you where there as a TE group, brilliant. The hues of orange in this one is very appealing. The curve of the water line really makes it extra special. Fantastic and captive work..

Tes dernières photo du mont comme celles de henk sont vraiment très belles!
Un cadrage ici bien choisi avec le cours d'eau en S, une belle profondeur d'image et des couleurs terribles! Le semi contre-jour sur le mont et l'éclairage donne un superbe effet! Du très beau boulot! et apparemment quelle aventure ! ;-)

I love the hazy mood on this one. ;)
Pure gold on that reflection. That S curve on the foreground is beautiful and helps giving another depth of interest to the photo. The rest is perfect photography.

Jamais deux sans trois! J'ai vu les photos des deux autres compères que j'ai trouvé très bonnes et la tienne ne l'est pas moins avec l'exploitation de l'eau au premier plan, évidemment on a pas ici le reflet du mont comme sur les deux autres mais néanmoins j'aime beaucoup aussi.

décidément, entre toi et Henk, les photos du Mont St Michel pleuvent, et sont toutes aussi belles les unes que les autres ! Magnifique composition aux tons dorés, ici. J'aime beaucoup ! (un jour, il faudra que j'aille voir cela de près, je n'y suis jamais allée !)

Seems worth the effort to make this scene Andre. Top use of the S-shaped foreground, the little mist and then of course the place itself St. Michel. The long exposure also good for the soft surface of the water there. Impressive result here.

C'est vrai qu'elle est belle celle-ci monsieur Jones... J'y regrette juste un très léger poil de netteté, mais probablement qu'il s'agit là d'une des plus belle vue du mont qu'il m'ait été donné de voir sur TE... J'imagine qu'en vrai ce devait être également très agréable....

Loved your note and how you have gotten to this work. If the monkeys in your head is not rattling your mind, guessed you wouldn't need me to tell you why this work attracted that much attention. Well, anything golden and glowing within a twilight setting can be that drawing. With or without those monkeys screaming :)

Hi Andre,
It's hard to believe that you were poking your eye with a tripod when you framed this beauty!! The curving reflection to Mont St Michel as it glitters like a jewel in the sunset colors and evening lights. The angle is well worth wet trouser legs; of course I wasn't the one that got wet!!
