Le Mont-Saint-Michel1 is a French commune located in the department of Manche Basse-Normandie region which takes its name from a rocky island dedicated to St. Michael where now stands the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel.

The architecture of Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay are the busiest of Normandy and the third of France attraction (after the Île-de-France) with more than 3 million visitors each year 2 (3250 000 20063). A statue of St. Michael placed at the top of the abbey church rises 170 meters above the shore. Major element, the abbey and its dependencies are classified as historic monuments by the list of 18624 (60 other buildings being protected by suite5); the town and the bay listed for 19,796 on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
