Arriving in Cherbourg Photo

Photographer’s Note

I had a 3 days break and I decided to go to Cherbourg, in order to discover Contentin, a place I've never been before.

Cherbourg is a port where I expected to find industrial moods, "modern" achitectures and huge boats.

What I found when I arrived was first of all a "great" grey sad light !

ce style de photo me plait énormément car je trouve que pour faire une photo comme celle-ci, il faut avoir un oeil exercé et une attirance pour le graphisme que peut donner ce genre d'endroit. C'est très réussi et le résultat est un vrai tableau. La lumière grise et triste (comme tu dis) permet d'avoir des teintes homogènes sur cette compo.

Hi Stephane
I guess Cherbourg must be like London at the moment with its grey skies. A very industrial piece this, and quite appropriate as it goes well with the grey skies as a backdrop. The rivets and bolts are brought out well in your shot, together with the rusting metal work. Very good observation.
At least I hope you had a relaxing break!

a new series? I like industrial photography very much. On the icon I thought it is b+ w, but I see the sof colours. Well done,

Hi Stépahne, a good thing about this kind of light is that it works very well with the the big ungainly and rusted industrial constructions you show us here (are these cranes?), I like the PoV and the limitted set of hues used here.

cela pourrai être une photo en N&B, le ciel est effectivement gris, mais avec ce genre de lieu ca donne une homogénéité, mise en bouche j'attend la suite....

A grey, but very nice picture. The steel buildings stand out well against the white background. The little touch of colour of the rust is a nice detail. Good work!

Hi Stéphane, My first impression to this picture is that it is a B&W picture. Then, I notice the colors in this picture. I believe that a B&W version would be making sense to this view. Good contrast and nice clarity.

AH ah, bien vu Stéphane.. te voilà sur mes pas. J'aime bien ton cadrage, je l'avais pas vu ! Mais à ma décharge, il pleuvait pas mal à notre escale.
Dommage que tu n'ais pas conservé la roue entière sur la gauche. Excellente composition des structures.

Il y a tellement peu de couleurs qu'on dirait que tu as désaturé mais d'après la note c'est le temps avec sa lumière grise qui l'a fait pour toi. Il reste une ambiance de plomb dans un paysage industriel et des volumes en acier, un vrai décor de polar.
