Photographer's Note
Bayeux is a town and commune in the Calvados department in Normandy in northwestern France. It is located 7 kilometres from the coast of La Manche (English Channel) and 30 kilometres north-west of Caen. The city, with elevations varying from 32 to 67 metres above sea level is bisected by the River Aure. Apart from its magnificent cathedral it is perhaps best known as being home to the Bayeux tapestry that depicts William the Conqueror's defeat of Harold of England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, thus allowing William to take the throne of England.
The city was known as Augustodurum in the Roman Empire. It means the durum (Celtic word duro- 'door', 'gate', Welsh dor, Breton dor 'door', 'gate') dedicated to Augustus, Roman Emperor. In the Late Empire it took the name of the Celtic tribe who lived here : the Bodiocassi, Latinized in Bajocassi, Bajocasses, and this word explains the place-names Bayeux and Bessin. Bodiocassi has been compared with Old Irish Buidechass 'with blond locks,

Obviously a town that is steeped in history. I like this view of the old buildings. The pov is good and places the riverside buildings on a strong leading diagonal alignment. The broken clouds ensure an interesting sky overhead. Well done.

Good Morning Stephen - An atmospheric shot of a peaceful and undisturbed location, I like this quiet backwater with the river flowing up close to the houses. There is a lovely gentleness here, created, I suspect, by the soft light and understated colour-palette. An attractive shot and a very interesting note. Have a fine day. Rosemary

Good Morning Stephen,
A most interesting note and, yes, the town is famous for its wonderful, detailed tapestry.
A well-chosen pov uses the wall as a useful, textured guide, to lead us from the f/g, deep into the scene. There is a good balance between the tall f/g roofs and the well positioned spire.
Excellent details of this quiet place, with a strong sense of history.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Salut cher Stephen
Ahh the Bayeux Tapestry, of course! Your note is fascinating, particularly the discussion on the roots of the word Bayeux. This is such a charming town, the canal and the angle add so much charm to the already beautiful old architecture. And it seems your weather is slowly improving little by little. A vibrant, wel-composed and sharp photo. very beautiful, congrats.
Bonne amitiés

Hello Stephen,
this is a very attractive and interesting picture in which perspective and depth work superbly to give us a pleasing and accurate impression of the distinctive architectural style of the antique town. Sharpness is excellent. I also love your effective light management and the way you have captured textures and details against such a bright sky. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Hi Stephen
well shot scene.
I'm a huge fan of these stone-cities.
everywhere you look you can see charm and history.
whats not to like.
Looking at the town, can you walk up that tower in the bg?
great perspective, as the tower is the same height of the building in the fg when in reality its much much taller.
cheers

Hi Stephen,
ottima scelta del POV con il canale d'acqua sulla destra a dare profondità all'immagine.
Ottimo lo sharp e la luce anche se è poca è ben gestita.

Hi Stephen.
Amazingly, I recognised this scene as soon as I saw it! I should upload a shot or two which I took in the same quarter of the town, beside the stream. Very good exposure, and great capture of the glint of light on the water. Terrific viewpoint which gives great depth. When I was there we were beleaguered by many small English schoolboys running around with bits of paper in their hands, asking endless questions in unintelligible French. Anyway, I found it a very appealing town over and above the famous tapisserie.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi Stephen,
The length of the river is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the architecture of the buildings. The light has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.
