This is a blue hour shot of the Cathedral of Metz. The Cathedral is the principal church of the diocese of Metz and the seat of the bishop.. The cathedral was built from 1220 to 1520 by joining together two older churches. It is situated on the Place d'Armes in the center of the city. With a height of 41 meters its nave is the third highest in France after the Beauvais and Amiens Cathedrals. It has got beautiful stained glass windows and the area of the stained glass is 6,500 square meters.

A great architecture picture. The yellow and golden tones are very nice in this blue hour shot but also in combination with the pink facades of the houses on the foreground, specially with the one on the left side.
You also show well how high and mighty this cathedral towers out above the city.
Best regards, Paul

beautiful blue hour shot. The architecture is truly spectacular! Perfect balance of the illumination with the blue sky. Although I would personally rather turn it a bit to the left because it makes a feeling that it is a bit tilted. But I know that is the perspective.
Great place, very well done, TFS

Nice BH shot, the illuminated cathedral loos fantastic against the blue sky, some noise removal would be useful and maybe you could avoid the buildings in front.

It seems you have quite a collection of French cathedrals. The floodlight of the cathedral is very well captured, and the yard in the front looks very cosy among the trees and the more sparse light from the two lamps. A very atmospheric night shot.

Hi Ulf, This is a stunning shot, amazing lighting and POV.. very effective.. I like the deep colours.. The modern buildings in front somehow compliment the image contrasting the old and the new. TFS and have a great weekend Ricx

Sharpness, exposure, pov, colors and composition are all excellent!
I love seeing all those architectural details, specially on the cathedral! The fact that's placed against the dark blue of the sky is also a highlight here!
TFS - congratulations!

Marvellous colours! The strong dark blue sky above the really golden cathedral makes this a really memorable picture. I had no idea Metz had so much to offer, we have just passed it along the motorway...

Hey Ulf! This is really great!
The superb architecture of this cathedral is really fantastically highlighted by all that golden illumination and create a unique spectacle! Considering that the lower part was in the shade your light management is excellent and the choice of the hour really ideal to get a blue sky.
Very fine indeed!

The Cathedral of Metz is inclining for the right.I know it is not easy, but you could have done better. The colours of the Cathedral are beautiful.Good twilight!

Outstanding shot. It seems the cathedral is made of glass.
pablominto (53744) 2010-03-23 7:48
Amazing details in this fine nighttime capture!
The foreground creates distance and enhances the feeling of dominating architecture, as the cathedral is placed on top of the hill...
The warm artificial light creates attractive colours that contrast very well with the deep blue sky!
Jakab (3867) 2010-04-17 16:36
and now the other option: the cathedral in "big total" as film makers would say. Though the Gothic lives mainly in the structure (and not in the ornamental details) I find this approach less convincing than the former one. For me it is rather a cold documentary photo despite the warm artificial lighting. The new buildings in the foreground are so much different and simple that they kill the poetry of the magnificient cathedral. I have checked the photos taken from this cathedral on the TE and I must say that your picture is one of the best - but I like your former version better.
Have a nice weekend!
