Photographer’s Note

In the heart of Verdun throne the Monument to Victory and to the soldiers of Verdun, built in 1920 by the architect Leon Chesnay. It is at the top of a giant staircase of 73 steps carved in the ancient rampart.

At the top, a crypt can be visited free of charge.
It keeps books, photographs and newspaper clippings and a huge roster of fighters fell on the battlefields of Verdun and those who were decorated. The guard is there to give all the necessary explanations and information on other sites of Verdun.
The crypt is topped by a tower supporting an impressive warrior, due to the sculptor Jean Boucher, symbolizing the powerful defense of Verdun. The whole is flanked by two Russian guns taken from the German front.

Young people in Verdun, who call the monument Goldorak (Grandizer)(!, see also a nice place in the sun, to discuss among friends after school... As everywhere else.
