Note from the net

The General Hospital
Built during the 17th century
The general hospital is an impresive building and features the Renaissance style in Dole in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its construction began in 1613 and was stopped by the sieges and wars that was three times suffered by the town between 1636 and 1674. But the main buildings were built in 1636. In the 17th century, the general hospital was the most important project, impacting on the urban scenery.
The architecture of the building
The facade, on the canal’s side, is very regular and gives an impression of strict severity and sobriety. In this composition, the horizontal lines dominate, particularly the balcony, which crosses the whole facade. This balcony is a surprise for those who approach it. If you look closer at it, you will see a profusion of sculpted decorations on the consoles which hold the balcony : masks, fruit, flowers, leaves, geometric designs, lions’ muzzles, monsters... compose a very diverse picture. In 1686, a magnificent corbelled turret was added at one side of the balcony.
A general hospital and now a reference library with multi-media collections and facilities.
The general hospital’s vocation was to welcome the ill and above all poor people who could not be cured at home. In 1663, a few nuns from the Sainte Marthe Congregation came from Beaune to look after the ill people and founded the first community of nuns in the General Hospital. This hospital worked for many centuries, until 1973. It was then transformed into a geriatric centre while the Louis Pasteur general hospital was just opening its doors. Since 1992, the building has been converted into a multi-media reference library.
