La Petite France, grazie ai suoi meravigliosi canali, è il quartiere più caratteristico del centro storico di Strasburgo, dove in passato abitavano e lavoravano pescatori, mugnai e conciatori.
Le bellissime case in legno a vista risalgono al XVI e XVII secolo. I tetti spioventi proteggono i granai dove un tempo venivano fatte seccare le pelli. A un estremo di questo quartiere si trovano i Ponts Couverts considerato uno dei punti più pittoreschi di Strasburgo.
Essi hanno conservato il loro nome nonostante abbiano perso le coperture nel XVIII secolo. Sono dominati da quattro torri del XIV secolo, vestigia di antichi bastioni che vegliavano sull’indipendenza della repubblica strasburghese.
Subito dopo l’annessione di Strasburgo alla Francia nel 1681, una nuova cinta muraria venne edificata dall’ingegnere Vauban. Dai Ponts Couverts ci si può inoltrare nelle stradine del Finkwiller, antico quartiere di conciatori e pescatori della riva destra, oppure nelle deliziosa rue du Bain-aux-Plantes e rue des Dentelles, tra le case in legno animate di logge, frontoni e alti camini.
A qualche metro ddi distanza dai Ponts Couverts, intorno al 1690 fu costruita, ad opera di Tarde, la Diga Vauban, detta Grande Ecluse (“grande chiusa”) perché, in caso di necessità, permetteva di inondare tutta la parte sud di Strasburgo.
