Photographer’s Note

Riquewihr is a walled village dating mostly from the late middle age in its present form.

It is situated in the middle of famous vineyards and this situation plus its exceptional architecture unfortunately helped transform it into an Alsatian Disneyland. This means it is crowded anytime, especially the whole summer or during advent time where the parked cars on the sides of the access roads can reach the next village 3 kms away.

I got the chance to be there last friday in the early evening as I needed to visit my favorite source of Alsatian wine a few kms away in Ammerschwihr, so I stopped to take a few photos like this one that shows the entrance to the city taken from under the Dolder tower (XIII th century). This tower that guards the inner wall (I'll show you later Riquewihr was defended by two layers of fortifications) provided a convenient shelter from the falling rain as well as an attractive warm framing for my photo.

A big number of tourists were already populating the streets and I had to wait a while for the view to be reasonably clear of them, the good news is they have taken the Christmas Market away from the main street to a square in the lower town, so this main street no longer looks like the Tokyo metro at peak time.
