Photographer's Note

The castle itself was built in a Renaissance style from 1509 under the leadership of owner, Jean Cottereau, Treasurer Superintendent of Finances under Louis XII, then under Francis I and Henry II. At his death in 1530, he left a legacy as well as the surrounding lands of Jacques Angennes, lord of Rambouillet, his son. His son Louis Angennes inherits in 1562 and became Baron de Maintenon.
His heirs sold the property to the Marquis de Villeray-d'Angennes. December 27, 1674, Françoise d'Odet de Riantz Angennes wife, Marquis de Villeroy, heiress of Charles Francis of Angennes sells its castle and the title of Maintenon for 150 000 pounds to the widow of the poet Scarron, lady Françoise d'Aubigné which becomes marquise de Maintenon.
