Flax
History:
Common flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) was one of the first crops domesticated by man. Flax is thought to have originated in the Mediterranean region of Europe; the Swiss Lake Dweller People of the Stone Age apparently produced flax utilizing the fiber as well as the seed. Linen cloth made from flax was used to wrap the mummies in the early Egyptian tombs. In the United States, the early colonists grew small fields of flax for home use, and commercial production of fiber flax began in 1753. However, with the invention of the cotton gin in 1793, flax production began to decline. During the 1940's fiber flax production in the U.S. dropped to nearly zero.

bonjour philippe, an endless blue, everywhere blue, just blue...
nice composition, maybe i'd just lower the camera a bit to limit the sky in the frame and have more of the blue? but i'm not sure;
anyway - a nice landscape picture;

tu nous a habitué à mieux ... le cadrage laisse un peu trop d'espace à ce ciel blanc (f/4 et 1/60 ...) Par contre le leger tilt me plait et donne un peu de dynamisme. Et en plus il n'y a pas l'ombre d'un clocher en vue !

Beautiful sweeping view across the field of flax, Philippe. A nice depth accomplished by this kind of framing, where the eye wanders towards the trees in the background. Very nice, with a moody add provided by the clouds.

Je croyais que le lin était importé d'Egypte, mais je ne vois point beaucoup de vêtements dans le commerce.
L'avant-plan donne une belle profondeur et le ciel dramatique est toujours le bienvenu.
J'ai quand-même légèrement ajusté en WS.

Le champ a décoloré sur le ciel, c'est un instant magique de lumière de fin de journée, pratiquement, c'est très beau!
Une très belle perspective, une belle vue très profonde, c'est très bien fait!

La lumière n'est pas facile à gérer mais tu t'en sors très bien.

Je trouve le premier plan un peu sombre à mon goût..
Vraisemblablement les conditions lumineuses n'étaient pas de la partie. Le WS de Didi reprend l'essentiel et j'apprécie assez.
Cependant j'aime cette composition et si le ciel est un peu pâle, avec une touche menaçante, il contraste avec le champ de lin et l'ensemble crée une atmosphère pré-orageuse!

The lighting here is very special, Philippe. I like how it just 'touches' parts of the flax field. The scale of the area is quite impressive - with the trees so far off in the distance. Nice atmosphere. Well seen.

Hi Philippe, Thanks for the informative picture with the informative notes. The flowers start from the foreground scatting pieces to the far field connected same color made a special visual effect. The background sky and the trees made a very nice contrast. A very enjoyable picture. Well done.

Magnifique, cette mer de lin ! Chez nous, c'est une fleur que l'on rouve à l'état sauvage mais très rarement cultivée dans des champs. C'est vrai que l'usage n'en est plus des plus fréquents (quoi qu'il fournisse une graine comestible excellente dans le pain, en plus de son usage textile habituel !). Merci du partage, Philippe !

Ce ciel nuageux et l'éclairage de fin d'après-midi est du plus bel effet sur cette mer de fleurs bleues.
Pour le Workshop, je trouve que la luminosité a été un peu trop accentuée. Je préfère l'original

A well composed and sweeping view of this colourful field, Philippe. It is so unusual to see such a proliferation of blue flowers of this size. The lighting on the field is intriguing. Of course there is that one bright spot in the sky, but somehow it does not distract; its almost like a balance of fiery light above and subtle earth tones below. Very well captured and presented. Thanks for the info. This picture is sort of experimental, the sky is very bright and the fields pretty dark, in an artistic way. Interesting to shoot this straight towards the sun. The blue flowers are nice to look at and I like how they flow together into a great mass of flowers.

La campagne te réussit bien. J'aime ce champ immense de lin (je ne connaissais pas ses fleurs) fleuri sous un ciel nuageux à souhait. Le WS de Didi n'est pas mal car il éclaire plus le champ.
Je ne vois pas de clochers à l'horizon, même pas ronds comme ceux de PIGNA ;-))

Une ambiance très mysterieuse et presque sombre si ce n'étaient toutes ces taches bleues et ce ciel saturé.

voici un tres joli champs de fleur, cette bas lumiere met tres bien en valeur la belle couleur. J'aime bien la mutlipication de la fleur pour n'obtenir plus qu'une masse colorree. Je trouve le ciel un peu trop clair, mais rien de genant.

voila une bien belle surexposition du ciel pour ouvrir les basses lumières. Le résultat sur les fleurs est probant. Et le manque de détail dans les hautes lumières donne de la clartée. Pour les puristes cela peut choquer.

Phillipe, I must say that this is one of the photos I like most from you. It sure is quite a different image from what we are used to see from you and it a pleasant surprise. In it I like just about all. The POV pointing down to capture the near flowers create a great and dramatic sense of depth, bringing dynamic to the photo. This is helped by the slight curved tilt of the field in the horizon which works here a little bit like the use of the fish-eye lens in urban environment.

Then, there’s the overexposure in the sky in a central position. I love how this breaks the rules by making us focus in the center of the frame against what is usual (uncentered subjects, etc), As the light there is so strong, and the bottom part is dark, this becomes the main central point of focus. Finally there’s the vigneting and slight blur in the corners which help to focus again in the center. This also creates the feeling that it’s the “hole” in the sky which is highlighting the central part of the field.

I believe that one girl, or boy or both in the middle of the field with the appropriate poses this could be a very good fashion photo as it is daring, the atmosphere is almost surreal and very dynamic.

A very moody image and a favorite.

Philippe, a very lovely photo! I like the point of view and the wide open space of the field. The only thing I suggest to improve a photo like this is to consider what it would have looked like if the light was behind you. Taking the shot into the light source is very bold, but it does result in over exposure of the sky and the beautiful blue could be brought out more. Thanks for sharing, Garry
