Chinon, a photo from Centre, Central

Photographer's Note

Chinon is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France well known for the Château de Chinon, a medieval castle which at times served as the residence of the kings of France and England. The settlement of Chinon is on the bank of the Vienne river about 6 miles (10 km) from where it joins the Loire.Chinon was included in the French royal estates in 1205. It was during the Hundred Years' War that the town took on a new lease of life, as the heir apparent, the future Charles VII of France, had sought refuge in 1418 in the province. The town remained faithful to him and he made lengthy stays at his court in Chinon. In 1429, Joan of Arc came here to acknowledge him.

From the sixteenth century, Chinon was no longer a royal residence.

Chinon est située au sud-ouest de la Touraine, aux confins de l’Anjou et du Poitou. La ville de Chinon est implantée à un endroit où la Vienne vient affleurer une falaise de tuffeau.

Le château est construit au sommet du coteau, la ville basse sur l’étroite bande de terrain qui sépare le coteau de la rivière. Chinon connaît une croissance urbaine importante au XIIe siècle, lorsque Henri II, comte d’Anjou devenu roi d’Angleterre en 1154, fait du château de Chinon une de ses résidences préférées. En 1205, après la conquête du château par Philippe-Auguste, la ville passe dans le domaine des rois Capétiens, qui continuent de venir y séjourner.

Au début du XVe siècle, pendant la guerre de Cent ans, Chinon devient une des résidences préférées du roi Charles VII, venu se réfugier en Touraine et Berry. C’est ici que Jeanne d’Arc vient le rencontrer pour la première fois, en 1429.
Le pont de Chinon vient d'être restauré.

when I look at the photo very closely, I'm really impressed with the level of sharpness even in the most deeply parts of the scene.
especially in the tower, we can clearly see the 3 open windows.
lovely exposure and dimmed lighting, just perfect in all honesty.

Hello Jean Jacques - A beautiful light bathes this tranquil scene, I love the way it plays across the row of trees giving very clear definition to their shapes. Your composition is well balanced, the bridge making a strong lead in line. Reflections are soft and attractive. I think the small figure in the FG adds to the tranquil ambience, I wonder if he caught any fish? Lovely work. Warm regards rosemary

Voilà une photo d'une ville que je dois avouer honteusement ne pas connaître malgré la proximité du Poitou. Cette prise donne envie d'aller y voir de plus près.
Pas sûr que j'y verrai ce pêcheur en limite inférieure du cadre.

Le regard hésite entre prendre le pont pour aller plus loin ou encore traverser à la nage pour atteindre le château qui se prélasse au sommet de la colline, le tout sous une très belle lumière.

the light in this picture is lovely, especially in the sky and patterned clouds moving across the scene. your viewpoint with the bridge on the right leading the viewer towards the line of trees and buildings above them is superb. excellent depth of field and sharpness.

lijkt dankzij de mooie lucht en de warme kleuren.
De gekozen standpunt is werderom heel goed (de

Bonjour Jean-Jacques,

J'ai pris une photo quasiment au même endroit en mai dernier lors d'un périple à vélo le long de la Loire. Chinon m'avait bien plu avec son château accroché au sommet de cette échine rocheuse.
Tu as su profiter d'une belle lumière pour mettre en valeur tant le pont que le château vers lequel le regard est naturellement conduit par la diagonale de ce pont.
