Why the heads were cut ?
It is necessary to look with attention the curves where the saints are carved, all the heads were cut at the time of the revolution (there were not only the noble ones to which one cut the heads)!

The three gates of the Western frontage carved between the end of XIIe and XIVe century are richly decorated, and in spite of the mutilations of the Revolution, iconographic cycles of a very great richness preserve.
The central gate whose tympanum tells the martyrdom of Etienne saint, appears of a rare iconographic density: Work of the months, Liberal arts, moral Mirror, animal realities and fantastic, Virgin wise and Virgin insane..., all these topics are there to recall to faithful the teaching of the Church. With the pier, the large statue of Etienne saint is the only admirable vestige of the statuary which furnished before the Revolution splayings with the gates.
