Photographer’s Note

And now I take you along to Burgundy, to the famous "hospices de Beaune" with his coloured tiles.

Here what the "guide des routard" says about these roofs:

Roofs of Burgundy

The tiled roofs glazed with the geometrical reasons form integral part of the Burgundian landscape as well as the vine or the rich person pastures of Charolais. These tiles rythment as well of the religious buildings like theSaint-Bénigne cathedral of Dijon as of the civil buildings of the great time of the dukes of Burgundy. Most famous of them is without question the hospital in Beaune, built by Nicolas Rollin, chancellor of Philippe the Good. Later, the members of the Parliament of Burgundy, who will build superb private mansions, will not forget this original ornamentation which is not Flemish, like makes it circulate a tough legend. The poets of the vintage prefer to believe them reserved in comparison with the Almighty and the realist authors continue to question themselves, knowing the rather severe nature of Burgundian and its direction of the economy.
